Double barrelled name - Mrs VD

We're newly engaged and are debating what to do with our names when we get married. My surname starts with V, and DP's starts with D. We want to double barrel and ideally mine would go first just because of how they sound together - mine has several syllables and ends with a vowel so flows better into his, which is one syllable and ends with a consonant. (Not sure if that makes sense when you don't know what the names are, sorry!)
However, there is the slight issue that VD = venereal disease. Would this bother you? As the names are a bit of a mouthful, are people likely to just use the initials? Would you even notice what it stood for if it wasn't pointed out to you?
I generally don't care what people think of this kind of thing, but equally don't want to voluntarily choose to have people associate my future family with an STI.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I know what VD stands for though I haven’t heard it for years. So people use initials likenthatvghough? I have a double-barrelled name and have never been called Mrs TW.

CMOTDibbler · 06/02/2019 17:44

My DS is double barrelled as dh and I kept our names, and is is frequently labelled as C-D. So it is a consideration tbh

Isthisnamealright · 06/02/2019 17:45

togertiger that's good to hear! I guess I was envisioning people using it as a shortcut to refer to us, e.g. "what time are we going to the VD's tonight?" I'm hopefully just overthinking this...

I never get called by my surname initials it's just JE. My first initial and the first initial of my double barrell.

Isthisnamealright · 06/02/2019 17:48

CMOT yeah that's what I'm worried about, especially as it would be quite a long name.
juney ok that's useful thank you

Children can often be referred to by their initials if there are multiples of the same name. Less of an issue for adults. Do initials get used in your workplace? VD is a bit archaic. Not as bad as a combination like BJ!

D-V isn't a great way round either!

MrsCatE · 06/02/2019 17:50

It would be DV other way; still arguably contagious but more likely to admit to e.g "I was off work due to DV" as opposed to alternative ....

bingoitsadingo · 06/02/2019 17:54

I think it's fine. I dont know anyone who would say VD, everyone says STIs now!

Isthisnamealright · 06/02/2019 17:59

AnotherPidgey and MrsCatE funny you should spot that - my first name starts with a D so my initials have been DV my whole life Grin it was only since joining Mumsnet that I noticed the potential connotations there.

And AnotherPidgey no it wouldn't be an issue for either of us at work, thankfully.

I hadn't considered DV as diarrhoea and vomiting, in my line of work it would be domestic violence- not sure that's any better TBH Grin

PCohle · 06/02/2019 18:14

Sorry, VD absolutely makes me think STD and I would never use it for that reason. I am a bit of a child though.

Lots of email addresses etc use initials...

Leeds2 · 06/02/2019 18:17

I would avoid the VD double barrelled name, if I'm honest.

Isthisnamealright · 06/02/2019 18:21

PCohle fair enough Grin
With emails though, wouldn't they also include the first name initial? So I would be DVD (lol), rather than just VD, which I don't feel is as obvious... Or do some places only use surname initials?

I’m 30 with 2 degrees and I work in healthcare I didn’t know what vd was.
I was taught by a Mrs VD in school and she was my all time favourite teacher ever.

StillMedusa · 06/02/2019 18:31

My kids have a double barrelled name and they have definitely been known as first name CR.

DS1 is a singer songwriter and his known name for gigs is Zach C-R

It's definitely going to happen but I don't think VD is worse than DV :)

TheDropBear · 06/02/2019 18:37

VD is a bit of an outdated term now compared to STI/STD so people making the connection might depend on their age.

My dad's initials are V(middle name)D and my cousin is STD. Not sure about the cousin but my Dad had comments about it as a child but not as an adult.

NotANotMan · 06/02/2019 18:39

Nobody under 30 would even know what VD stands for. DV is much worse.

cloudtree · 06/02/2019 18:42

In our circle those with double barrelled names do get called "the SPs" or "the DPs" and so you would be "the VDs"

So I wouldn't, no.

Mmmhmmokdear · 06/02/2019 18:43

I know what VD is, I'd have a chuckle to myself the first time I thought about it, but I would probably then move on & not notice it any more.

Fiddie · 06/02/2019 18:46

The double barrelled at our school get called Mr and Mrs VD or DV

Neither of them work in my opinion although VD is worse

There’s a child at my DDs school who is B-S. This format of name then surname as an initial is always used for when the child is in the newsletter or match reports etc. I always read it in my head as bullshit and think poor kid saddled with that.
