Children’s party food

DSD 6th Birthday Party is going to be a full class party with a disco and some games.

For food, I’m a bit lost so I’m wondering:

Would you fill individual lunchboxes, and if so, what with?

Or go for the traditional free-for-all buffet?

I’m leaning more towards the lunchboxes but I don’t want it to be like a school day lunchbox IYSWIM? I’m worried it’ll be too samey!

Ooh @Gherkinbee let us know what you go with and how it goes!

I wouldn't put out whole cherry tomatoes or grapes for young children, too great a choking risk.

Not even aged 6??

Gherkinbee · 06/02/2019 20:19

@StepMug, will do 😎. And @Hollowvictory, I know in my heart of hearts that the cucumber sandwiches will get dry on the outside, soggy in the middle and will have one bite taken and then spat out. And that's the best case scenario.

MeetOnTheledge · 06/02/2019 21:13

No, not at age 6 at a party.

@StepMug feedback for you...very little eaten out of the lunch boxes. They all filled up on crisps. However, I would definitely do them again for a smaller party but not for a full class one. And I chickened out of making sandwiches.

I find sandwiches are rarely eaten. Cucumber sticks etc generally are. As are as many crisps and biscuit as they can manage.

Successful food has included sausage and chips, pizza, mini sausage rolls. Not all at the same partyGrin. Far less hassle than sandwiches.

I went retro last time and did cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks. All stuck in half a grapefruit. Never seen anything eaten so quickly.

My DC would eat cucumber sandwiches. But not ham, cheese or jam. It's often a source of annoyance that kids meal deals only include these three options. To get a sandwich they'll eat (egg, tuna or hummus) I end up buying an adult portion between them. The process of splitting it agreeably is worse than negotiating Brexit 😂
