Hairdresser Horror

Help!!
I have an appointment with a hair dresser at half 9 to get a full head of foils and a cut, she's a mobile hairdresser so it's at her house. I have social anxiety and I'm bricking it. I haven't had my hair cut for 3 YEARS because I am so scared to! My last hairdresser I had since I was born so I was comfortable with her, then I moved here and she couldn't travel out to me. I've never met this new lady and I'm so nervous. I've never had my hair dyed professionally either. What should I say when I knock on her door? What should I expect to happen? When do I pay? and how long will it take? My hair's quite thick and waist length. I'm just wondering what on earth I will speak about with her? Also I very rarely leave the house.

Sorry if my thoughts seem a bit erratic

I’ve had a lady come to my house to do my hair & was the same, we said that she ought to put a guide up on her Facebook page to answer these questions!
Maybe drop her a text to see if you should wash your hair before you go.
Have a very good idea what the shortest length you can tolerate is and how to describe that. It will grow again, but it’s irritating having your hair too short.
Do you know how much she’s charging you? If not text & ask so you can gave the right money ready. Saves faff over making change.

Ime hairdressers usually talk for you, but ask the usual questions, holidays planned, kids? I find that hard too, & can never hear over the hairdryer.

You will be there for a long time if you are getting foils so you should take something to read to keep you occupied. I get anxious when going to the hairdresser's too. I stopped having foils because I am there for so long. But hopefully you will be able to feel relaxed when you are there.

You don't have to chat. I usually ask how long they have worked in hairdressing and chat about about hairdressing until I find something else to chat about. The hairdresser will ask you questions if they want to chat.

Pay at the end once everything is finished. Hopefully you will be very happy with your new haircut and colour :)

Bring a stack of magazines or a kindle, to avoid the small talk

If I’m gunna be there for so long do you think it would be okay to take a bag of crisps to eat while she’s doing my hair?

Do not wash your hair before highlights! You will be there a couple of hours if its foils as they take ages to put in and then time to develop. I like to watch as they work and ask about what they are doing. Pay at the end

dementedpixie · 06/02/2019 06:59

Take drinks and snacks and a book/ magazine/ kindle

I haven’t washed my hair for a couple days. I have bleached my own hair before and I know it works better on unwashed hair, although I have asked for a balayage so it won’t actually be on my roots

She will probably ask if you'd like a drink so if you prefer to use your own mug take it! You can take crisps too, once the foils are on you'll be sitting for about 20-30 mins waiting so can eat them then maybe take something to read too if it helps.

I understand about social anxiety in new situations! You want every single stage mapped out so you "don't make an arse of yourself" 😊 Yes to bringing food, magazines, kindle whatever. You won't look rude if you whip one of these out!

Your hairdresser will be used to this especially if she's a mobile and will have experience of putting people at ease.

For what it's worth I love going to the hairdressers! It's a chance to be pampered, have a chit chat if I'm up to it or just relish in a bit of peace and quiet. I've never been to or had a mobile hairdresser though - always a salon.

Satonsofasad · 06/02/2019 07:32

When you are there, think this.

"I am here. Being pampered and having my hair done in a nice warm house. Someone else out there is sat in a hospital waiting room/Dr's surgery waiting for something awful. Hmmm these crisps are nice!"

Asdfghjkl1234 · 06/02/2019 07:35

I’d be a little bit concerned that you haven’t met her before, how did she do your allergy test?

2ellenor2 · 06/02/2019 07:37

@Asdfghjkl1234 she popped the kit in my letterbox last week to do

I'm going to pop to the shop before hand then and get some magazines. I read on her facebook page a review from someone with anxiety who said she was really reassuring etc, which was why I picked her

Have you told her your anxious op?
I have a lot of anxious clients. I can normally tell to be fair as doing my job for so many years I pick up on the body language.

After the initial consultation/chat etc she will probably lead the conversation to start as it's pretty natural for us Grin
Hopefully you will relax a bit more once you get started.

I really feel for clients that come to me and are anxious/nervous as I'm like it with dentists so I always tend to explain what I'm going to do and why etc etc so I know the clients more reassured and that normally relaxes them a little and then conversation will hopefully come easier.
Hopefully you will get to enjoy the experience op

Bluedrums · 06/02/2019 07:46

Good luck. I hope you enjoy the experience.
