Crappy or annoying things when you start a new job

Managers haven't put the IT request in for a laptop for you or they have but IT haven't actioned it yet and you wait days before you can log in. Or you do have the equipment but no log in ID.

Forgetting peoples names because you meet a lot of people in one go. But they are only meeting one person and easily remember your name = guilt about not remembering and awkwardness to ask again.

Being a loner for lunch. Managers or a colleague should take you to lunch on your first day to help you settle in but understandably, their lunch hour is their own and can't be arsed.

Being given a million online learning courses to do but no actual hands on training.

Please add to list if you have any!

Day 2 of a new job, I have spent most of my time on the phone to IT support so I can access what I need to do my job. Other than that though everyone is super friendly and I no longer have a micro-managing boss so I am feeling happier than I have done in years 😊

Stupid getting to know each other sessions or the two lies and one truth game. I’m not here to play games, I’m here to work. Do not get me started on those teamworking events that not one employee I’ve ever known actually likes but companies seem to love

I have no official desk so I'm hot desking and I haven't been given a laptop bag so I have to carry my laptop everywhere will me, all cables and headset just in my hands. Very annoying!

It can feel quite lonely in a new job. I wish they'd give new starters a buddy who knew the low down on it all and could fill you in on all the things you need to know that are never included in the induction!

  1. Not having a desk for you.
  2. Giving you a budget to identify a company car for them to buy you, then at the last minute telling you to travel 400 miles to pick up another car and drive it back because someone else is leaving. (I was getting on so well with the car salesman, who now hates me as a massive time-waster.)

I had a lot of the above in my current job, but it’s actually made me more resilient and has been a useful learning experience in getting stuff sorted myself.

I once worked somewhere that when somebody new started, they put a tub of Roses or similar on the new person's desk. Idea was that everybody knew it was there, email got sent out introducing new person to everyone, it was to get them to go and talk to the new person while they got a sweet, something there for a conversation starter if needed (there's been a run on the Green Triangles/ nobody likes the Cadbury's Caramels, watch out for Derek. he always tries to grab a handful, Doreen from accounts needs a new filling after trying one of those toffees so beware, etc).

I always thought it was a nice touch - didn't cost the company much but was a great way to introduce new staff and build a little staff morale at the same time!
