I have a reason for asking. In the context I am thinking they were used it could mean that the person used the dots as a sign they didn't believe the person is actually unwell or has more to say.

EG. Hope you feel better Jane...

yes knitwit 101 I would read your comment as leaving the end of the sentence to make the reader add their own ending...
(see what I did there! :) )

Ok so now I've read your update I will say it's a disbelieving....

Rather like ok get better soon nudge nudge wink wink 😉

Jenasaurus · 05/02/2019 21:21

the thing is it was completely unnecessary for the rest of us to have read the comment, but we were all included in the email, it was a general one to us all and then the bit at the end "hope your feeling better Jane..." and now we are all thinking things, that if it was sent just solely to the individual then we would be none the wiser. Even more weird when you think the person 'Jane' wont have access to the email until they return to work, that's if they do.

I use it when I am indicating that I am considering how to say something in the negativity it deserves but without just being really blunt and rude.

In that example I would take it as being 'there is more to say but I am not saying it'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis

This does suggest that there is something further to say....

MayWiddle · 11/05/2019 02:30

My phone sometimes adds random dots...

Jackyjill6 · 11/05/2019 07:59

I am surprised that the email has gone to everyone.

englishdictionary · 11/05/2019 08:06

I use it on here if there is more to say, thinking about it though, it's only if the more to say is negative!

'Yes op blah blah blah but...'

'Blah blag is what you said earlier' or 'you said he wasn't in your earlier post'

Almost confrontational.

I have no idea i did this until I read your thread - nuts make an effort not to.

This just popped back up on my TIO, I'm into intrigued. about why it's started up again after 3 months. How/why did you find it, resurrecting poster?

Al2O3 · 11/05/2019 08:35

Are you overthinking this?...

englishdictionary · 11/05/2019 08:48

caught

How did I not notice that!

villainousbroodmare · 11/05/2019 08:55

Whoever wrote the email doesn't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're'. So I think you are overinterpreting the significance of the ellipsis. They probably just think it's a stylish way of ending a sentence.
I hope the bullying issue is resolved; sounds unpleasant.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/05/2019 10:44

Someone on a completely different forum does this at the end every single sentence - and she posts a lot. So far I've restrained myself from asking what on earth she's got against full stops.
