Chinese New Year Gift?

EmLH · 05/02/2019 18:57

Last year we went for a meal at our local Chinese restaurant on the main day of Chinese New Year. This was totally by accident but DD8 was delighted as she received some money in a little red envelope 🧧, as I now know is tradition. We are going for a meal at the end of the week and would like to buy the lady who usually serves us a present to wish her a happy new year. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be the most appropriate/appreciated? I don’t really want to give money as I would like something a bit more personal. Any recommendations gratefully received! TIA

Money in a red envelope is traditional. I know it feels impersonal from a western point of view but it’s the most appropriate

Red envelope is normal. When I was in Singapore we gave them to school teachers, taxi drivers, waiters, manicurists, etc during CNY. DH gave them to all the staff who resorted into him (it’s an expensive time!)

Avoid cut flowers as there is apparently an association with death.

@Veterinari how much would you give an adult? I don’t want to unintentionally offend! We’re not in London and not particularly well off!

@Stinkytoe she’s the manager, would that make any difference?

Would £7 or a multiple of 7 be lucky?

Hm, in my Asian culture we only give red packets to children and that's only if you are a married person. Pineapple cookies or candied fruit/coconut are a traditional gift but you would have to buy from an Asian shop. I would give homemade cookies or fruit - we usually gift persimmon or satsumas with the leaves still attached. I am sure whatever you decide she will be really touched at the thought!

Okay, thank you. Would be nice to buy something like that as then it can also be shared out. Obvs can’t afford red envelopes for every member of staff!
