If you have a min wage job, what do you do?
Looking for inspiration

I'm a medical secretary in a specialised role. I absolutely love my job. It requires a great deal of concentration and attention to detail and people's health and possibly lives depend on me getting it right! Still only minimum wage though, thanks NHS Smile

Namechange8471 · 05/02/2019 18:50

AlwaysSomethingThere

I work 35 hours (not 9-5 though). 7.90ph plus £80 sleepover shifts I average £1200 pm

InternetRandomer · 05/02/2019 18:54

Cleaner in chain hotel. Hard work physically but I see that a bonus as it’s like a workout. My heart is pumping fast for the whole shift as you have to work so hard and fast to meet the time targets that’s there is literally no time to even pause.

Pros
School hours
Not too long shifts
Not hard mentally
Minimal responsibility

Cons
Hard work
Back breaking
Hours vary from mad busy to dead quiet so money not reliable.

I like it but we only have the money as extra. Not sure it’d be much fun to have to rely on it. I’d opt for supermarket work (which I’ve done before) if I was able to work evenings.

Community care work, it is my second job

Hopefulmidwife · 05/02/2019 18:59

Receptionist/ward clerk in a hospital. Currently on £8.92 an hour

hendricksy

Great that you don't have to take work home, but it sounds stressful, it sounds really difficult too.

I need very little responsibility or having too much to do to create stress.
Just recovering from a huge mh illness , I wouldn't want folk to think the need for lack of responsibility or stress was laziness.

I would avoid retail then , you always get shouted at when it's not your fault .. maybe care work as it will be physical but not difficult , or cleaning ?

hendricksy · 05/02/2019 19:10

I meant it's NOT much more than minimum wage in my first post..

RomanyRoots · 05/02/2019 19:16

Thanks hendricksy

I had been tempted by the hotel cleaning with the free workout Grin
I'm supposed to be doing lots of activity according to my counsellor.

It's definitely something on these lines.

Exercise is great for mental health but also a nice working environment with lovely people is too . Good luck ..

Crystalblue13 · 05/02/2019 19:38

If you want an active job how about being a post woman? I’ve always thought that would be a lovely job, getting out and about walking around.
They get paid well too

Raspberry88 · 05/02/2019 19:53

I've always worked in bars and cafes, can be pretty stressful but usually very flexible. My favourite job ever though was at a concert hall. It was a casual contract, mainly because it was quite seasonal, but there was always plenty of work and they really looked after us. It was a combination of being an usher and working on the bar. Got to see loads of concerts and worked with lots of lovely and interesting people. I loved it! Very active too, lots of walking audience to seats and restocking, taking bins out etc.

@FrontRowSeats. Re: customer service agent.

Are you classed as self employed?

I currently work for the NHS (admin/customer services both patient face to face and on the phone), but will be semi retiring in two years, and it sounds like the perfect job for me.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 05/02/2019 19:59

@Hopefulmidwife, same here.

I’ve previously been a ward clerk and now a receptionist in an outpatient clinic. I think we do a hell of a lot for £8.92.

Chocolateandabook2019 · 05/02/2019 20:01

As in, the customer services agent sounds like the perfect job for me.

Hopefulmidwife · 05/02/2019 20:05

Chocolate we do far too much and take so much shit! Also, because of the new pay banding and because I was in the middle when they brought the new scale in - im stuck on 8.92! 😂

Catrabbit75 · 05/02/2019 20:06

www.sensee.co.uk/homeworking/index.html

Home based customer agent jobs are on the link above. They offer permanent contracts, it looks great - if you have a quiet home office space

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 05/02/2019 20:17

I work in an organic food truck - mainly coffees and smoothie bowls. Minimum pay over here is about £8.50 an hour. It's not stressful but it can get quite boring. It's a seasonal job as I tend to move around a lot and will be heading back to Europe for the summer months. I'm also studying through the OU so need something flexible.

In the UK I worked as management in hospitality which worked out less than minimum wage due to regular 50-60 hour weeks 😒 was also highly stressful!

The least stressful job i had was as a bag packer in a supermarket! I nearly died from the sheer boredom of it though! I also don't think they exist anymore in the UK...

Chocolateandabook2019 · 05/02/2019 20:20

We certainly do @Hopefulmidwife. I got stung with the new banding as well.

@Catrabbit75, thank you, that’s very helpful!
I’m sure I can create a quiet home office space.
Fabulous.

YerAWizardHarry · 05/02/2019 20:57

Bartender in a very busy restaurant. Done bar work through college/university. Restaurant work tends to mean an earlier finish time.

Catrabbit75 · 05/02/2019 21:02

@Chocolateandabook2019 you are very welcome. I’d be interested to hear if you have any luck with it, as I am considering it for the future

RomanyRoots · 05/02/2019 21:06

I love the home working idea, it would be great for me, but I need to be with people, not at home.
Some brilliant ideas though and thank you very much.
I hope the interested in the customer service have some luck Thanks

Very qualified (L6) nursery practitioner and SENCo in an Outstanding nursery, lots of responsibility, many, many hours at home writing up observations and tracking progress, yet still min wage. If I didn't love it, I wouldn't do it, but Early Years is insanely underfunded.

GandolfBold · 05/02/2019 23:56

I am about to start a new job as a complex care support worker on £7.83

Before that I worked as a community support worker for just above that.

RomanyRoots · 06/02/2019 00:06

I do think these jobs should be better paid than this Thanks. It's such a shame pay and conditions can be so bad for the care.
