Has anyone cancelled or considering cancelling their TV licence?

We rarely watch live TV and have Netflix so are considering cancelling our TV licence. I know we can't watch Iplayer but looking on the TV licence website it seems we can more or less watch everything else on catch up.
I know we can declare not needing one online but will we get hassled with people knocking at our door?

The cover up of the pedophiles.

You’re aware this wasn’t last week...?

live channels that do not receive any of the fee.

Wrong.

LookImAHooman · 06/02/2019 18:00

Never hear people complaining about not paying their due on the roads and other who don’t drive having to be taxed to pay for their free rides. But low betide you should listen to free radio and not pay for it...

If you want to take that example, how do you think goods get to you? How do you think we have routes that the emergency services can use? It’s a vital part of infrastructure that quite rightly falls beyond just drivers. It’s not the same as an optional TV licence.

I cancelled ours years ago. I had people at the door in my previous property, 2 bouncer looking people, who were quite intimidating and insisted I showed them the tv and sockets in the house. I had a warning letter afterwards even though I didn't watch BBC and had one TV for netflix.

Now, years later, I cancelled again when we moved and have ignored the door. I confirm when they mail me to ask, and won't be answering the door to be harassed and intimidated again when i've done nothing wrong.

We have Netflix and Prime for the same cost of the BBC. I would've watched Blue Planet but that's all i've missed and we'll probably get it on DVD.

systemwwr · 06/02/2019 18:03

WildfirePonie only if you watch BBC on those devices. No BBC (live or catch up) no TV license.

Sheogorath · 06/02/2019 18:05

"I've never called the fire brigade out. Why should I pay tax to support the maintenance of fire services when they don't do anything for me personally."

That's a ridiculous comparison. The for brigade are a necessary, live saving service.

Take private vehicles of the road and the goods would get there quicker & more efficiently. The cost of maintaining the roads would reduce as would the cost of the emergency service. Public transport cost would reduce and services improve, pollution would fall. It’s optional to own a private car it’s not compulsory

I'm sure that will be a comfort to the victims.

No other live channels receive any of the fee. Channel 4, Itv and Channel 5 get nothing, to name a few.

Thanks systemwwr

“Part of the fee also contributes to the UK broadband rollout, funding local TV channels and S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, as was agreed with the government as part of the 2010 licence fee settlement.”

And I feel completely for the victims of Saville et al. I really do; I’m sad I have to emphasise that but fair enough. But if anyone thinks the BBC is run by the same people as then or that the culture is anything like that which afforded the cover up, they are either a) wilfully ignorant, b) completely without imagination or c) living in a fucking time warp. We are in 2019. We need to deal with the organisation as it is. To continue to project the paedophile cover-up onto the people and organisation of today is frankly bizarre.

MrMeSeeks · 06/02/2019 18:29

I wishthe bbc was pay only. Haven't watched it ( or any bbc channels) in years, nor do i listen to the radio.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/02/2019 18:34

The BBC is pay only isn't it? You don't watch it, you don't need a licence and if you do, including the iplayer, then you do.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/02/2019 18:50

It’s not pay only though it’s included watching any other live channel which it should not.

longtimelurkerhelen · 06/02/2019 19:16

@LookImAHooman

So they don't contribute to any of the known channels. I am willing to debate with with you, but if all you are going to do is copy and paste from Wikipedia, you don't have much of an argument. I have looked and cannot find ANY channel other than the BBC or it's subsidiaries that gets any of the license money. I actually thought Itv and channel did get money but I was wrong.

If you think the culture has changed much, you are very naive, if the #metoo movement has taught us anything it's that the predators are all still there, especially in the entertainment industry.

They still don't pay women as much as men in comparable jobs, I'm not talking about the talent, the behind the scenes staff. So it would seem they still do unethical things if they can get away with it.

I am also sad you had to emphasise that too, but if you make off the cuff remarks, it paints you as very callous.

PussyTasteLikeSkittles · 06/02/2019 19:22

I got rid of tv licence a couple of years ago, I filled out online form saying I had tv attached to dvd player only. They sent a guy to check and he confirmed it so I don't get any hassle from them.

LookImAHooman · 06/02/2019 19:24

‘Known’ channels? I assume you mean mainstream national. That’s a little derogatory to others, not to mention dismissive of contributions to areas such as (but not limited to) broadband rollout, which needs all the funding it can get.

And that wasn’t Wikipedia. That was the TV licence site. Don’t make assumptions.

Agree completely that pay is an issue, as it is for others that don’t come in for anything like such disproportionate bashing. That doesn’t excuse it (again, I’ll speed that out for safety’s sake).

Disagree entirely that my comments are callous, and there have been far more uninformed ‘off the cuff’ remarks on this thread. Again, those who still scream ‘Saville’ at today’s organisation would do well to remember the concept of time passing. They do a huge number of talented and decent enough people a grim disservice.

LookImAHooman · 06/02/2019 19:24

*spell that out

ginghamstarfish · 06/02/2019 19:38

Yes, cancelled it a few years ago. Resented paying for it as we hardly ever watched anything on BBC - maybe one drama series and one documentary series a year. Also we were just starting to hear about the millions paid in salaries to tossers like Clarkson etc. Glad we did it and can't see us having one again. It seems that BBC dramas and Attenborough stuff etc is sold to Netflix and Amazon, so you would eventually be able to see them. We alternate between Netflix, Amazon and catchup (except for BBC progs of course) and find there's more than enough to watch for an hour or two a night.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/02/2019 19:53

It almost seems like a badge of honour on here to hate the BBC.

For the record, I find loads of things I like to watch, so I am happy to pay for it. We don't pay for Sky or Netflix. It's horses for courses.
