However the lack of long relationships or even much comment on his love life other than he's "private" about it suggests to me he's possibly gay.
It's no longer (thankfully) considered a "scandalous" thing so the tabloids outing him would likely backfire on them. Hence merely a lack of comment.

Have to say though I felt for Emily when she saw lorelai's little "shack" that she lived in after leaving home. Iirc (though I can't find the quote if someone else can I'd be grateful) she said something like "she must have really hated us" and she seemed really hurt that lorelai would rather raise Rory in such straitened circumstances than with her parents wealth.
"In fairness, Dean is the most likely to have a stable life - but I'm not sure he and Rory were well-suited." Given he cheated on his wife I'm not so sure. Plus I think Rory would quickly have been bored rigid with him he was nowhere near her match intellectually or culturally.
