My baby is 2 weeks old, the cord has now come away so wondering if I should bath him or wait a bit longer?
His feet are really dry and flaky so was going to at least moisturise.

I bathed mine a day or two after coming home from the hospital. You'll be fine to give your baby a bath now. Just use warm water and a cloth if you don't want to use any productss

Products*

Is it forbidden to bath a newborn? I gave mine a bath next day we were back home, so he was 11 days old. I would of done it earlier, but had to spend 10 days in a hospital as I has c section. No soap or foam though, just pure warm water. I don't think anything is wrong with it.

The day they were born, in hospital, the nurses showed me how to do it. Though that was a long time ago. DS 13 years ago had a massive poo explosion up to his ears and I wouldn't have gotten away without one with some products.

Reccy2018 · 05/02/2019 11:07

My babies cord came off after 4 days and we bathed her when she was a week old. Just water.

RebeccaCloud9 · 05/02/2019 11:08

Whilst in hospital so a couple of days old. Why haven't you done it sooner? Is this a thing now? My youngest is less than 2 so it's not that long ago that I bathed him so young!

NorthEndGal · 05/02/2019 11:09

She had her first bath about 28 hours old, in hospital.

Myyearmytime · 05/02/2019 11:11

In hospital one or 2 days old

HenweeArcher · 05/02/2019 11:12

He was two weeks I think. Even now at 5 months he usually only has a shower after swimming and one or two baths per week.

Birdie6 · 05/02/2019 11:12

In hospital, about 1 - 2 days old. After the bath I dabbed the cord with spirits to dry it out. Never had any problems with their skins . Bath time was one of our favorite times of the day.

GookledyGobb · 05/02/2019 11:13

It is a thing now. The longer you wait the better as you’re washing away all the good stuff on their skin. Moisturisers/products not recommended as can cause eczema

But in answer to your question 2 weeks old

Kokeshi123 · 05/02/2019 11:14

Five days old. My hospital (not in the UK) said that it is ideal to wait a few days, and allow the vernix to melt into their skin. I'm sure it's not a huge deal either way, though!

insancerre · 05/02/2019 11:15

Ds at one day old on hospital- the midwife showed me how
Dd was 2 days old after I’d come home from the hospital
I couldn’t imagine waiting 2 weeks

dementedpixie · 05/02/2019 11:16

I think they advise to hold of a wee while as the vernix acts as a protective barrier to the skin. Mine was washed sooner than that as they had blood and gunk in their hair (mine weren't born bald) that needed removing

Butteredghost · 05/02/2019 11:16

2 weeks here

thismeansnothing · 05/02/2019 11:19

4 days, in hospital. She had glasses taken from the top of her scalp and she still had dried blood/scab so mw showed us how to bath her.

thismeansnothing · 05/02/2019 11:20

Glasses?! Gasses

TheLionQueen1 · 05/02/2019 11:22

I was told to wait until cord fell off so for DS that was at 9 days old and he had his first bath then!

DameSylvieKrin · 05/02/2019 11:23

We were told by the paediatrician to wait more than a month as her belly button was still oozing.
We washed her every day, of course, just not in the bath.

HappyPunky · 05/02/2019 11:25

Mine was ten days old after the cord came off. That's what I was advised by the midwife.
Just water and in for barely a minute because she screamed so much and didn't enjoy baths until she was able to crawl and play with the toys.

ItsMEhooray · 05/02/2019 11:27

It was 2-3 weeks I think. I'd read that you should bath a baby straightaway as it's better for their skin not to and when they asked to use him to show new parents how to bath baby in hospital I said no Blush what an idiot I was 😂

Mississippilessly · 05/02/2019 11:29

We were told to wait a month. So we did.

IMakeNoPromises · 05/02/2019 11:33

Within the first week but we were also told a bath in hospital was unnecessary and more than 2/3 timed a week wasn't necessary either. He's 3 months now and I bathe daily but water only, I do use shampoo sometimes as his hair can smell of unwashed hair/vomit!

Willow1992 · 05/02/2019 11:33

4 years ago we were told to wait 2 weeks or the natural fluids left on his skin from the womb wouldn't work whatever witchcraft they were supposed to do. I think I did do it a bit earlier though, I have 9 days in my head.

Ridiculous though, he had blood in his hair and was covered in gunk when he was born. Happy to trust my instincts and do what feels best when DC2 is born.

sometimessometimes · 05/02/2019 11:42

DDs cord came off around Day 5, think we gave her a bath a few days after that.
