What books were you not allowed to read as a child (for their content or other reasons?)

When I was 8, I was very much into Judy Blume's kids' series about Peter, Fudge and Sheila... all fine. One of my teachers, upon finding out I liked Judy Blume, allowed me to get some books from her collection, so then I got her book Then Again Maybe I Won't. I think I was about halfway through it when my Dad looked up the description online and told me I had to stop reading it because I was too young for it. In hindsight I think he was right TBH, I read it as a teen and most definitely realise now that 8 is too young for this one. Anyone else?

Was allowed to read any as a child, house full of books, no restrictions.

But when I as 13 or so, my older brother did censor a horror book I was reading, as he thought it was too much for me. He did this by ripping the last few chapters off the rest of the book, which was just as well, as I slept with the light and radio on for months afterwards as it was.

I was allowed to read whatever I liked.

I was reading Daniel Steeles “Jewels” in the last year at primary school and the teacher had a problem with it but my mum didn’t

My parents didn't ban any reading. But I banned myself from reading ghost stories as I got one out of the library when I was about 10 that had such a scary cover I made my parents keep it under their bed. Grin

My mum did ban me from eating curly wurlies though Sad

I remember my mum signalling disapproval for the Wells series, Veronica at the Wells, No Castanets at the Wells.

They were utterly harmless but there was an element of romance she obviously thought I was too young for!

I wasn't stopped from reading them though.

Interestingly Ribbon my parents were the same, they censored inappropriate music but I was allowed to read anything.

Nothing was banned for me, I don’t think it occurred to my mum that books could be unsuitable. At 12 or 13 I was reading James Herbert and Erica Jong, the latter had sex scenes in more graphic than I’ve seen anywhere since (with the possible exception of online fanfic 😄) . Part of the issue was young adult didn’t really exist as a genre at that time, I pretty much went straight from Narnia and Willy Wonka to the Valley of the Dolls and Pennywise.

Enid Blyton and Judy Bloom. The first because DM thought she was a horrible person and the second I guess because sex?

Although she didn't seem to have a problem with me reading her W.Somerset Maugham books when I was barely 13. To be fair I didn't really understand a lot of the themes.

Ha! Nothing. My mum was getting rid of a load of books when I was 11, mostly Mills and Boon types, and asked if I wanted them! To me, throwing away books was sacrilege, so I rescued them. It wasn't good for me to have read them that young though, I do think it negatively affected my attitude towards sex.

Nothing was censored at home but the Nuns did call my mother into school about one particular book, I think it was called the hitchhiker. I can't even remember what it was about now.

Flowers in the Attic when I was about 9 or 10. I still haven't read it!
That was the only one they actively took away from me. There were others my dad didn't approve of in my teens (historical bodice rippers!) but they weren't taken away from me.
