City break with kids - Especially Barca

checkedcloth · 04/02/2019 18:07

We’ve booked a three night break at Easter to Barcelona with DCs who are 9 and 7.

Never done a city break with kids before so any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. My previous child free breaks have always centred around fabulous bars and day time drinking!

Any tips for family friendly places in Barcelona would be great too. Keen to still eat in great places and sample some cava!

TIA

The beach, the aquarium, the maritime museum, the Bocqueria Market, the magic fountains. There's a theme park but we've never managed it yet! Great city for kids Smile

Following!

We've booked to go 3 nights in May with 10yo. I've booked self catering apartment so we've got a bit of freedom and somewhere for 'downtime' between sightseeing etc.

I'm thinking of doing one 'culture' activity each day and the rest fun stuff. I wonder if Groupon have a Barcelona site that may feature some offers? Off to google ...

Thanks all for your responses, magic fountains sounds like a good place for an evening stroll.

La Sagrada Familia is definitely worth going inside. Buy tickets online before you go. The church has large stained-glass windows and their effect is most striking mid-morning and mid to late-afternoon. If you don't mind heights, the views from the towers are amazing, but there's no elevator on the way down from the towers, so you’ll have to descend a very long, very narrow series of corkscrew stairs. If you don’t like being confined to small spaces, this may not be the best thing for you. If you go up the towers, you’ll have the opportunity to choose between the Passion Towers and the Nativity Towers. The Passion Towers give you a better view of the ocean. The Nativity Towers give you better views of the mountain range behind Barcelona.
Definitely go to Park Guell and explore every nook and cranny. Get there as soon as it opens in the morning and take your time. Also take water and a snack.
Casa Battllo is worth going inside. Book in advance otherwise you'll have to wait in two queues! Try and go early in the day and don’t bother waiting in line for the ridiculously over priced gift shop.
Watch the Magic Fountain between 9 and 10 pm on Thursday, Friday or Sunday. It’s worth keeping the DC up late for. Just wrap up warm.
About two thirds of the way up the Ramblas, on the left, there’s one of Europe's largest and most famous food markets, La Boqueria. Visit at least twice, once for lunch and once before you go home for souvenirs!
Eyescream and Friends ice cream parlour is great fun and will be a big hit with the DC. It’s on the waterfront just across from the aquarium (which is another must-do with children!)
La Nena chocolateria started out as a chocolate cafe and got a name for itself by serving the best churros and hot chocolates. It's diversified into salads, sandwiches and burgers too, but I defiantly recommend the churros!
There are some really original and unusual play areas/playgrounds in Barcelona. Some are in the Parc de Diagonal Mar and one of the best is on the Diagonal Mar shopping centre's large (very) outdoor terrace. The shopping centre also has a Lego Fun Factory. This room offers big buckets of lego and duplo, a screen with videogames, a table with books… There, you’ll be able to leave DC unattended, while you mooch the shops! Next to the fun factory, there's a large pet shop and nearby there's a stand with remote control cars. For 4 Euros, the DC can play for 10 minutes, whizzing them up and down the shopping mall! Diagonal Mar is a 10 or 15 min. ride on the metro from the city centre. It's right next door to the natural history museum.
Cuitadella Park is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle. It has the city zoo and also has row boats, fountains, and plazas. Ethel are several play areas and a great life-size replica of a Mammoth (my Dc love to sit on the trunk).
CosmoCaixa is a little bit of a trek but worth it. It’s crammed full of activities and interactive exhibits. Don’t miss out Toca Toca.

Don’t underestimate how busy it is. Buy tickets in advance, do any sights very first thing ( or last thing) and don’t over plan.

The open top bus is good for an overview but gets boring towards the end ( lots of stopping and starting) DO NOT get off at anything Gaudi as you won’t get back on. Getting off at Montjuïc for the view and drink is nice ( grotty toilets). Get back on and go up the Columbus column (and drink wine at the bottom) or carry on down to the end of the beach. Shoko is a fabulous restaurant at the end right on the beach. It’s a nightclub after 11pm so the kids will love how cool it is. Great food and reasonable especially set lunch.
