What phase/set reading books are your reception aged children on?

DD is doing well at school... I think she is anyway.

The problem I have is that her teacher doesn't really give much away in terms of it she is where she should be with things. She's my eldest so I don't have a benchmark either, if that makes sense.

She's currently on set 3 phase 10. Does that sound about right for this stage in the school year? I just want to know if we need to be doing more or if she's on track to be honest. I worry that asking the teacher would make me look like I'm being precious.

Thanks.

Mine is in phase 2 set 4. So by that logic it seems like yours is reading ahead

FeelingBitterr · 03/02/2019 23:18

Oh, I've written that the wrong way round clearly I need to go back to school Grin it should say phase 3 set 10.

DD is on pink books, not sure what you mean by phases and sets?

I think these no d's of threads are unwise

DD (13) was and is way ahead in terms of reading. She sailed through the band's and was a free reader by the end of year 1.

DS on the other hand is nearly half way through year 2 and struggling through purple band.

Presumably by the time they reach 6th form they'll both be able to read fluently

Dont worry and don't compare. They'll all get there

I don't know about phases and sets, ours are just coloured and come from a range of different reading schemes. DD (September birthday) is on yellow band and it seems to be about right. She can work out most of the words but it's challenging without being too hard. She was moved up from red just before Christmas.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 04/02/2019 08:03

Ds is on band 3 phase 5 in year 2. He happily free reads at home though. Because he won’t read out loud in school (very shy) they refuse to move his band up though.

FeelingBitterr · 04/02/2019 08:52

I don't know if DD's books have colour bands. The bit that says the phase and set on hers is written on a red strip so possibly red would be her colour band? I really am clueless about all this stuff!

No phases or sets here. Colours.

There is no point in comparing to other children ...you will always get a range of answers and still not know how your child is doing. Just ask the teacher if your child is meeting age related expectations, or if she is above or below them. If she is not clear in her answer, explain you still don’t understand. but as PP said, your child will read in her own time, please don’t worry.

Catscratchclub · 04/02/2019 09:05

Honestly, there are so many different reading rates and schemes and at reception it can vary greatly because they are all just starting out. Ask your teacher! They won’t think you are being precious - it’s a common sense question to ask!

x2boys · 04/02/2019 09:08

Does it really matter? Ds1 could barely read at all at the start of year three he has some mild learning difficulties he can read fluently now in year 7.

sdaisy26 · 04/02/2019 10:13

As a teacher, phase 3 is perfectly fine for this stage of reception. My own ds is on phase 3 and one of the better readers in his class.

Phase 2 would also be fine at this stage. Phase 4 really ahead.

The phases relate to the way phonic sounds are introduced according to letters and sounds. There’s an overview here www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-phonics-phases

Most reception children will be learning phase 3 sounds now, and hopefully confidently reading phase 2 sounds independently.

So your child is doing fine. But you really don’t need to compare them to others!

Er... No idea. Quite basic ones, he's 4 Confused

FeelingBitterr · 04/02/2019 12:03

Thanks all. By the sounds of things she's on target 👍🏻
