Tell me the point of joined up writing in Y3

Sons school have “name of school” writing, cursive basically. But it seems this year they’ve been told they must join up their writing.

DS handwriting has taken a turn for the worse, just out of interest I’ve asked him to not to- it’s so much easier to read and is much neater.

Isthere actually any merit in them being made to join up? Interested in responses from teachers/parents/secondary teachers anyone who has an opinion.

Thanks

Isn’t it meant to be really helpful with spelling for people who are dyslexic?

Sirzy · 03/02/2019 19:06

It helps with spelling as the words should flow better with the shapes and patterns. It is also more efficient as generally quicker.

Theoretically, joined up writing helps you to write faster.

The honest answer is....

Government decided to put it in the curriculum because they think they know it all, if schools don't follow it they're breaking a statutory legal document. It appears much lower down the school too so your DC has been lucky to escape until now. I know some schools doing it in reception.

I think most schools teach like this now. DS has been to 2 primaries and they both taught cursive which they expected the children to join up as they progressed through the school.

Sometimes I can't make much sense of what they write but the teachers seem fine with it....

The speed thing resonates, ds has a tendency to hurry and joining up just isn’t helping his letter formation.

Ho hum. Looks like we have no choice

DS is learning cursive in reception...

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 03/02/2019 19:58

Children can't get greater depth in year 2 if there is no attempt to join. They can't get greater depth in year 6 if it is not all joined.

Jeffers3 · 03/02/2019 20:01

There is a requirement for handwriting to be both legible and joined to meet the Y6 writing expectations. Some children will meet without joining their writing but they need a specific reason for not doing so eg motor control problems or similar.
It gets worse before it gets better but will be better in the long run!

Schools in our area learn straightaway in reception. Even at nursery they form the letters with 'tails etc'on so they know how they join.

It means writing can flow.

My DS same as you OP it’s like having to restart all over again, the teaching method has changed, as I remember years ago when first child learnt individual letters it had all the flicks? at end of each letter so when came to doing joined up it was natural progression if that makes sense

Crockof · 03/02/2019 20:15

Agree with all above, but except when they get to senior school they have to write in black biro and no one gives a fuck if it's joined up or otherwise. It needs to be legible and they need to write fast. We spent hours practicing and being moaned at for my ds poorly joined writing. All pressure and stress for nothing except box ticking

gobbin · 03/02/2019 20:33

So much bollocks from the Govt insisting upon it.
Having been taught cursive in primary school my natural style is very much not cursive - I have been complemented on my handwriting on many occasions over the years. DS’s handwriting was shocking when learning to write cursive (he’s ambidextrous which was an additional factor.) His adult style is non-cursive, small and neat.

Quicker, handy as he gets older and they are expected to write more
