I’ve a poorly 3yo who’s temp is currently 39.3 and he is point blank refusing to take calpol - any advice?! He took it a few times yday and today and it brought his temp down but it’s now climbing higher and he is feeling very sorry for himself but just refusing to take calpol. What can we do?

Mix it in with a yogurt or something?

Needs must sometimes- wrap him in a blanket and squirt in to the inside of his cheek.

PoptartPoptart · 03/02/2019 17:42

Get a syringe and squirt it towards the back of his cheek/throat.
Give chocolate buttons as a reward.
Or, tell him it is non negotiable as it is medicine and he needs it to get better. You may need to force it into him but sometimes as parents we need to be cruel to be kind. Otherwise he might end up having febrile convulsions and require a trip to A&E.

I had to put DD’s in milk, it was the only way I could get it into her. We’ve had a few hospital admissions (respiratory problems, needing liquid meds incl steroids) and even the most experienced nurses met their match in DD. She was a nightmare and it’s the only thing she’s really objected to, she’s an otherwise placid child. As one nurse said, it was genuine terror.
Thankfully now she’s older (5), I can reason with her, she still hates liquid meds and I still have to put them in milk, but will happily swallow tablets

You can get paracetamol suppositories for children, DS1 and DS3 are ASD and refused calpol as young children, doctor prescribed suppositories.

Rustyigloo · 03/02/2019 18:32

Mine used to gag and wretch as soon as we went near her with the syringe. So negotiating and bribing her never worked.
Without her knowing we would mix it with very sweet yogurts or chocolate milkshake.
Weirdly at the age of 8 she suddenly starting taking medicine. There was no rhyme or reason to this turnaround!!!!

Thanks all! All great ideas, much appreciated. This time, randomly, a bath created a calmer, happier child which meant he took the calpol afterwards, thankfully. But I know we’ll have this again next time so thanks for your help.

Paracetamol suppositories from the doctors are always an option.

moreismore · 03/02/2019 20:22

Have a back up bottle of the good stuff that still has sugar in...

Daisychainsandglitter · 03/02/2019 20:30

As PP have said you can get suppositories from the GP. DD1 has ASD and point blank refused to take calpol until very recently.
Glad things are calmer since he's had a bath OP.

Our DD always refuses calpol too. So we mix it with strawberry nesquik. Her pink milk is a treat as she's poorly, she hasn't figured out the medicine is in there, yet!

Hope your DS is feeling better soon. Thanks
