Washer dryers

Exciting thread for a Sunday afternoon.
My washing machine has died and I’m thinking of replacing it with a washer dryer. Anyone got one and are they any good? I haven’t got space for 2 separate machines

I had a Hotpoint combo washer dryer a few years back.
Useless. Took several hours drying and clothes still damp then.
Spin twice then put on airers far better and clothes actually dry 😊

We have had two Hoover ones and love them. Had a Samsung Ecobubble one too, completely useless, left clothes soaking though normally has good reviews so probably unlucky there. I love washer driers, but they do take quite a while to do a wash and dry, maybe 4 hours or so but can put a load on in morning and ready when home from work.

Hotpoint one here and it's horrendous. We rarely use the dryer now. We could hang something outside on a rainy day and it would dry faster than our machine.

I have a Candy one in my flat. It's a monstrous piece of shit - drying anything takes about five times as long as a regular tumble dryer, it needs emptying all the fucking time, and it costs a fortune to run. It's on the its last legs, though, so I'm planning to ask the landlord if I can replace with just a decent washer.

I had one. Never again. Took forever to dry with the contents just becoming a steaming sodden mess. There is a moment when it does work its drying magic and you end up with brutalized clothes. It shrunk my clothes far more than a regular drier. I was glad to see the back of it.

The main issue with the one I had was that it automatically went onto dry mode (they might it all do this?). Meaning things were tumbled sometimes that shouldn’t be. I had to watch out for the wash cycle finishing, switch it off, sort the dryer/non-dryer clothes, then switch on again for dryer

PenguinPandas · 03/02/2019 15:22

Ours doesn't go on automatically but you do have to make sure you programme it right.

DameSquashalot · 03/02/2019 15:23

We've got a Smeg. It's great. Dries the clothes really fast.

BagofTeeth · 03/02/2019 15:24

Ours has a dial for the length of time of drying you want, there's an off setting on that so we keep it on that unless we want it to dry (which is only rarely), it will automatically start drying unless we have it on that setting.

I bought my first one a couple of months ago...so far so good

They are good as long as you don't dry from completely wet. A load can take 3 hours to dry so I dread to think of the electricity costs. I hang on airers/outside until almost dry then put through the dryer for 20-30 minutes to save ironing.

We have had a Zanussi and a Bosch. Neither was great at drying and the Bosch died after 3 years. We then had a John Lewis machine which was fabulous for 2 years but then started to develop problems and died just short of the 4 year mark when the bearings wentSad

Now given up on washer dryers and would like a tumble dryer but don't have adequate electrics/ventilation in our garage.

NanTheWiser · 03/02/2019 17:09

I've always had washer/dryers, but I don't depend on the dryer to dry my washing, mainly to finish off towels when they are almost dry. It's a Siemens IQ500, and works pretty well. Most of my washing goes outside when conditions are suitable, or on a rack indoors, provided you don't want to use the dryer exclusively for drying, then you should be OK.

The exact same thing happened with our JL machine last week. We hadn’t used the dryer function in a while as we got a heated airer instead, so we’ve replaced it with a washing machine and no dryer for now.

Had an AGE for 10+ years, before that a Bosch. We use the dryer mainly for towels as I like them fluffy. Occasionally I dry bedding or clothing items but not very often. We don't have room for 2 so it is perfect for us
