Do you regularly use traditional High Street shops such as butcher's and bakeries ?

I do. The bakery I go to most often is in the next town down the road and I always buy flatcakes and burger baps there. I occasionally buy extras such as chocolate cookies or scones. This particular bakery is somewhat stuck in a time warp judging by the display cases and fixtures, but they do well. All the cakes, tarts, cream buns and so on are fresh every morning and always seem to sell out.

I use a few different butchers for burgers, sausages, gammon, bacon and savouries like pork pies and pasties. They're all good and it's a privilege to have these shops to hand.

I know all these foods can be bought in the supermarkets but I prefer to pay more for higher quality. Of course, I appreciate not everyone can do do. I should add that I'm happy with a Hovis or supermarket granary loaf for toasting.

Enb76 Silly landlord. Hope you get something useful.

In my mother’s village the shops closed down one by one because of rent and the newsagents, the only one owned by the proprietor, took on each business as they did. As best he could anyway. An elderly population and 7 miles from the nearest town with an infrequent bus service meant he survived and people were grateful.

He became a grocer, bakery, dairy, even a post office. The other shops would be rented for a few months as antique places or tea rooms ((passing trade in tourist county) and then go under out of season and be left empty.

Such a waste.

Starlight90 · 03/02/2019 13:28

Not really. I tend to buy all in the supermarket.

But i do visit the butcher once a month to buy 20 huge chicken breasts for £20.

caesio · 03/02/2019 13:35

Bakery no we don't really have one our farm shop near us is excellent but if you are not there first thing on a Saturday not much left so I dont get to eat it often green grocers we don't have a convienient one

Paddy1234 · 03/02/2019 13:38

I make sure I spend £25 out of my food shop every week by buying local
Farm shop mostly as it will close down if we don't use it

theworldistoosmall · 03/02/2019 13:38

I got to butchers, local markets and independent shops.
No bakery as there isn't one unless the supermarket ones count.

Although I do support local businesses I also have to consider my finances and also use a chain.
For example, a market I sometimes go to. They sell coats, the cheapest is £65. I can go across the road to H&M, Gap etc and get a similar one for the same or cheaper.

CMOTDibbler · 03/02/2019 13:43

Yes - we have great farm shops locally, and some things are cheaper as you are buying direct. The asparagus offcuts in season are particularly good for this.
We are very lucky in this town to have butchers, bakers, fishmongers, greengrocers and a deli and we shop in those at the weekend and sometimes I'll pick something up at lunchtime in the week. I like less packaging and choosing just the amount we need as well as putting money directly back in the local economy.

Kescilly · 03/02/2019 13:43

No, we’d like to try the local butcher but the opening times make it too difficult.

Ragwort · 03/02/2019 13:44

I sometimes use the butcher as I work next door to one but honestly don't find the meat any better quality than our local supermarket. I rarely buy bread from an independent bakery.

MeetJoeTurquoise · 03/02/2019 13:47

Butchers, yes. We've reduced how much meat we eat but decided we wanted to shop local and have better quality meat.

Bakers, no. The one in town is not very good.

Fishmongers, no. There isn't one locally at all.

Greengrocers, no. It closed due to high rents.

mrsmuddlepies · 03/02/2019 13:48

I do. Both our local butcher and baker are far superior to supermarket goods. Sadly our brilliant greengrocer closed down.
Both the local baker and the butcher shop are thriving because the quality is excellent.

SymphonyofShadows · 03/02/2019 13:49

I use the bakers but the butcher retired so the shop is just standing empty. We sometimes use the farm shop but it’s down a track off of a major duel carriageway and the turning is on a bend, so it’s difficult to get out. They are going to start supplying a new, more accessible farm shop up the road so I will go there.

EduCated · 03/02/2019 13:58

No. The closest bakers I can think of is a 25 min walk away, and we commute an hour plus to work so no hope of getting to it when it’s open. We don’t eat meat at home, but equally nearest butchers is in the city centre, 30 mins walk. Ditto the commute issue. Greengrocers the same (and appalling quality, certainly not local produce).

MadauntofA · 03/02/2019 14:13

We have a great market in our town, so veg, eggs cheese, meat and bakery items there, most are roughly the same or slightly cheaper (except the bread, but the quality is much better so I tend to slice and freeze therefore little waste). I love quality, the fact that I can take 1 or 20 carrots etc. depending on my need, and almost no plastic (other than for the meat) brought home. I'll just need to invest in one of those shopping trolleys when I get older to lug it all home!!

MeOldChina · 03/02/2019 14:21

I prefer to but i don't have time to be doing multiple shopping trips at the moment. Just one big shop at Asda Click and Collect.

We've got a some good local businesses around that do quite well here.

AnotherPidgey · 03/02/2019 14:27

There aren't any local convenient ones around. Never been a butchers in my area and the greengrocers (which was handy) went about 10 years ago. A bakery has opened, but their bread contains soya flour so I have to go to Aldi for a particular loaf anyway.

There is a butchers in a village about 20 mins in the opposite direction of where I need to, so not much use.

If there was a cluster nearby, I'd use them but there's not much point in isolation where you still have to go to the supermarket for the rest of a top up.

Ronsters · 03/02/2019 14:27

We don't a have greengrocers in the town where I live. There is a fruit and veg market and a couple of butchers but I rarely use them. I buy fruit and veg at the supermarket.
We have a couple of good farm shops locally and I get a lot of meat there.
We do have a couple of bakeries, I don't eat a lot of bread/bakery items so I rarely go in, they do seem popular though.
No fish monger but we get the "fish van" at the farm shop, selling fresh fish. Quite a good choice and good quality.
I often use those pick your own places in summer, though they can be a bit of a trek.
We have also started getting a farmer's market on a Saturday, they seem popular and so are becoming more regular.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 03/02/2019 14:31

My local high street is a mixture of coffee shops, charity shops, pubs and bats mainly. There is a Gregg's, a couple of expensive card shops, a major supermarket and an Aldi. The only other shops are either not food shops or, in the case of the small 'international ' greengrocer, the food is not local and of poor quality.
The other nearby town is famed for its market, but these days it's all bowls of poor quality fruit for £1 or clothes which are definitely not aimed at the middle aged shoppers who visit. The last remaining fishmonger closed down a few years ago, the butcher is one of those who sells everything pre-packed coated in dubious chinese/bbq/mexican powdered flavours. It also costs a fortune to park in the badly lit and poorly maintained carparks.
So, no, I do not use local shops because even if they were open at a time when I could get there after work, frankly, the stuff I have delivered by a major supermarket, is far better than what is available locally.

fussychica · 03/02/2019 14:32

No. I don't like the bakers or the remaining butcher. I used to use the other butchers from time to time, the meat was lovely but very expensive. I came back from an extended holiday to find it had closed down in my absence. Not sure whether it was due to retirement or economics. Shame.

BearFoxBear · 03/02/2019 14:37

Yes, I hardly use supermarkets but I can afford to do so and live in a place with loads of local shops. I work part-time and and DH works from home, so we're around to use them. I'm quite evangelical about using independent shops, but I'm in a fortunate position to be able to use them.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/02/2019 14:40

We‘re in Germany. Our local butchers and bakers do thriving business and there is a local market with grocers and florists. Quality is excellent and you can often get things the normal supermarkets won’t stock. Like turnips! The bakeries tend to open very early so people can buy their breakfast rolls and pretzels while the butchers usually close at 6 and half day Saturdays.

Comefromaway · 03/02/2019 14:40

Rarely. I only go into the big town about once every 2-3 months. I usually do my shopping on Wednesday evenings after picking ds from school & droping him off at his tutor in the local town Sainsbury’s, B & M & the chippy are open but all the other local shops are closed by then.

EmpressJewel · 03/02/2019 14:48

We rarely use those type of shops.

Bakery/fishmongers - we don’t have one locally.

Butchers - locally, they are all halal butchers, which I don’t have a problem with, but the choice of meats is limited (can’t buy pork for obvious reasons).

Greengrocers - the closest one doesn’t have a large selection of produce. We do have a decent fruit and veg market, but it isn’t convenient to get to, so i can’t always go.

In recent years, I have made the effort to shop more locally and use more independent shops, but sometimes the supermarket is just more convenient.

Sleepyblueocean · 03/02/2019 15:10

No. A lot of my shopping is supermarket delivery and the rest is quick run ins to supermarket. I've stopped using local shops/ little supermarket during school holidays because I can't get ds's sn buggy through the door/ around the shop.

jay55 · 03/02/2019 15:12

Not in person but I use amazon fresh that uses butchers, bakers and fishmongers as well as Morrisons/booths/amazon etc
