London on a budget

Visiting London mid Feb as a birthday treat & looking for suggestions of places that are ‘must see’ but also those a little more off the beaten track.
Just DP & I going for 3nights/ 3days, staying near the Barbican. Will be getting a travel card but equally happy to walk if needed. We love theatre/shows, history, art & good food. #we arrive late the first night so suggestions of places to eat nearby most appreciated. Thanks folks 🙂

St.Pauls Cathedral is not free.

I went to the British museum at the weekend (free) and it was amazing!

Yep I've done the tour of parliament, I found it fascinating and politics is really not my thing!

Theres a chain of pubs called sam Smith's which is cheaper than the others, they sell their own brand.

Buses are cheaper than the tube, and you get to see the sights at the same time. They can often be quicker too.

There's often things going on in the Southbank, plus entertainers and bits. It's one of my favourite places in London.

If it's a nice day, the walk from Trafalgar square, through st James park to Buckingham palace is lovely.

If you visit the Sky Garden you should wander over the river and visit Borough Market. It’s worth a see and some of the food is fab.

The Charterhouse is a short walk from the Barbican and dates back to 1348, a former monastery and school, steeped in history. A standard tour is £10.

If you go to the Sky Garden first thing in the morning, you don't need to book and it will be much quieter.

Amazing views from the top of the One New Change shopping centre near St Paul's.
The Mithraeum is free, & fascinating, but you do need to book.

Vivaldi what time is first thing fir the sky garden?
I’ve been wanting to go for a while but haven’t been able to get tickets.

My favourite lower-cost places to eat out are Kanada-Ya for ramen, Padella in Borough Market for pasta and Food for Thought in Covent Garden (vegetarian).

If you want to go up the Shard, just go for a drink in the bar rather than paying for the platform viewing ticket - cheaper and nicer.

Walks along the South Bank, Cov Garden, Carnaby Street, the King’s Road, Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are all interesting and fun.

spacecadet thank you for the treasure trail suggestion - I've just bought my local one! What a great idea! Thank you.
