Healthy snacks the kids can make?

Ds isn't interested in flapjacks.
Anything else I could make with the kids to both occupy and feed them?

Flapjacks are far from healthy! Have you seen how much sugar goes into them?

I’d go for things like banana bread (still sugar but at least not 50% sugar), drop scones (mini pancakes), cheese scones or other savoury ones. Things like that. They could make their own hummus?

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/02/2019 08:23

They won't eat hummous, drop scones sound like a good option.
I agree Flapjacks aren't healthy but they are the first thing to be suggested every time!

Fairy cakes with nuts or seeds in?

My 9 year old loves making pancakes.

Does it have to be a sweet snack?
How about mini frittata’s or egg muffins with chopped up veg and cheese? They keep for a couple of days in the fridge and are lovely cold. Or you can reheat in the microwave for a minute.

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/02/2019 10:06

Doesn’t have to be sweet no. We have done egg muffins before with tuna but they didn’t eat them last time. If I put veg in they wouldn’t eat them ever again! 😂

I would be interested in this! I've been trying to get dc to eat more raw veg without much luck!

TescoValue · 03/02/2019 10:26

Google black bean brownies. They're suprisingly nice, by chocolate covered Katie. I used honey. They're obviously not super healthy but they aren't too bad as a small snack!

greenelephantscarf · 03/02/2019 10:30

do you have to give snacks? it's healthier all around to not eat between meals.

if you want dc to have a small meal (tea after school?) then how about fruit salad? or couscous with veg?

Flopjustwantscoffee · 03/02/2019 10:44

Pumpkin pancakes. You microwave some pumpkin to cook it and just mash it into a purée with a fork(you can do this in advance) then just make the pancakes according to a regular recipe reducing the amount of liquid you add to compensate for the pumpkin, adding the pumpkin at the the same time you’d add the milk/water. Or normal pancakes aren’t so bad

Flopjustwantscoffee · 03/02/2019 10:45

Or popcorn, it’s very easy but fun

Wingingthis · 03/02/2019 10:46

Not true that it’s unhelathy to have snacks?? I’ve always eaten little and often. It’s just how some people’s bodies are

JuniperBeer · 03/02/2019 10:49

Chopped apple and peanut butter?
Some ritz crackers and a bit of cheese?
Mini chipolata sausages with dip

Imperfectsusan · 03/02/2019 10:51

Banana bread or carrot or beetroot cake.

Imperfectsusan · 03/02/2019 10:55

Actually, what about pancakes? They're not terrible.

Or quick bread recipes?

RedLemonade · 03/02/2019 10:56

Bit boring but we make brown bread a lot (plenty of mixing and measuring), mini quiches sometimes, milk bread rolls with some dark choc chips in as a treat (does involve several pauses to allow rising though!).

Cheetahssitonfajitas · 03/02/2019 10:57

Pizza wraps. Get some soft flour tortillas, spread with passata, sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar, add whatever else in, roll up, wrap in foil, stick in oven for 10 mins at 180.

Camomila · 03/02/2019 11:00

Ants on a log?
Celery stick log
Peanut butter
Raisen ants

Thanks ladies, excellent ideas!
Elephant, yes they want snacks. If I they were snacking on chocolate and crisps all day then I would be agreeing but they aren’t. I am happy for them to have a snack between meals.
