Potato hash is bloody delicious

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 22:20

Potato, onion, garlic, and mushrooms fried up together with some paprika and chilli flakes. A then a runny egg bunged on top.

How can something so humble taste so delicious? Had it this evening for the first time in yonks and it was like I'd been reunited with a long lost lover.

If not the food of the Gods it's at least the food of the people who cooked for the Gods.

I've also thought hash has to have crispy potatoes although gravy with it is good.

Kurri. Yes, I know it’s nice...hence having it at least 15 times in the month we were there 😖😂

But...OMG. I’m off to check out other supermarkets...

However, what’s with this...havent had it for a while because I'd have to eat the whole haggis myself these days !

...I’m just not seeing the problem?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was little (before I was veggie) my nana used to make ‘plate pie’ mash and (tinned) corn beef pie. Good hot or cold. Yummmm.

ickleboo. Why powder not granuals? I’m wondering what veggie thing I could sub for the corn beef?! At what stage do you add the gravy? I feel like I’m missing something?! I can just see me making soup instead of tater ash😖

Potato cakes. Now bear with me..

Mashed potato, packet of sage and onion stuffing moistened but not soaked, make into hamburger patties size things, lightly coat in flour and fry. mmmmmmmmmmm It came about when my lovely friend decided I could no longer miss out on her ‘mashcakes’ (Potato and corn beef)

I haven’t had any of these for so long 😢. I’m not supposed to eat potatoes anymore 😖😖 but I think that may well get ignored this week. Oops.

Grin I think ASDA have them too Incrediblysad

I don't miss many things I used to eat before going veggie - but I did like corned beef hash. Not sure what you could sub for the corned beef - don't think chopped up quorn sausages would quite cut it Grin

And now i know what's for dinner tomorrow night!

isseywithcats · 03/02/2019 21:45

no bisto in corned beef hash, i do mine onions softened in butter, with mushrooms added to this pan, potatoes cut into small chunks boiled till just cooked, corned beef cut into cubes, then all the ingredients mixed together in a mixing bowl with a good knob of nutter added, salt and pepper to taste then put into a baking dish and put in the oven till the potatoes go all crispy and brown, food of the gods with brown sauce on top to serve

isseywithcats · 03/02/2019 21:46

the nutter is butter

Passmethecrisps · 03/02/2019 21:51

Hash = fried potatoes with onions and meat of some sort
Stovies = boiled potatoes with onions and meat of some sort

BellMcEnd · 03/02/2019 21:53

I’m going out on a limb now but I make an amazing veggie hash with Red Lentils.......

Also, potato, onion, peas and a squidge of tomato purée. And an egg plus broccoli on the side. It’s bloody lush.

Are you all appalled?? Grin

BellMcEnd · 03/02/2019 21:53

AND I’m liking the idea of mushrooms [controversial]

ThreadKillerSleepsInaCoil · 03/02/2019 21:57

These all sound wonderful. Now very hungry. And I'm out of potatoes. damn you mumsnet I did think potato hash was just spuds and onions though Blush

BalancingStick · 03/02/2019 21:57

I love the sound of Scandaloso 's original recipe. I'm going to try that one. And the person who suggested some avocado, they're inspired.

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/02/2019 22:17

Corned beef hash. I put corned beef, potatoes, carrots, onions, sprouts, Pearl barley, Worcestershire sauce and bisto best in mine. And dumplings on the top, finished off in the oven so they go crispy.

What you describe OP sounds like bubble and squeak.

Taffimai · 04/02/2019 07:46

Ok proper stovies are wonderful but you have to do them right! You need the remains of a beef roast. Use the dripping to soften sliced onions, add cubed potato and turns in the fat for a couple of minutes, add gravy, and stew until the tatties are cooked and starting to fall apart. Add some scraps of meat if there's any left. That's it. You drink a glass of cold mild with it. In some areas the tradition is oatcakes on the side. You need to use quite floury potatoes (for the falling apart!). Our local butcher sells tubs of dripping and gravy from roasting beef which is handy cos I only do a roast on high days and holidays.

Taffimai · 04/02/2019 07:47

Milk not mild!
