Do you think people ‘look down’ on UK holidays?

Just a thought I was having today.

My partner and I have booked a UK cottage holiday in August for us and his kids which has not worked out much cheaper than a holiday abroad. However when his kids discussed it with their mum her reaction was ‘oh can’t they (my partner and I) afford to take you away anywhere nice this year?’.

To be honest, we could afford to go abroad if we wanted to but just fancied a UK holiday this year.

Do people really look down on UK holidays and assume that people who holiday in this country must be too poor to travel overseas? Sorry if this sounds silly but her reaction has made me feel slightly paranoid.

My own children don't think they have had a holiday unless they have been abroad.

Yes they do.

In the staffrooom last week someone was aghast that a colleague had wasted £2k on a cottage in the country when they could have gone abroad for that much.

I find it more interesting going abroad but wouldn't judge someone who chose to stay in the UK.

We’ve had some lovely UK holidays. However I’ve gotten to the point where I am sick of the unreliable weather and feeling ripped off - the costs of doing things, the parking and the dreadful traffic.
DH and I (and DC) like to go and see new things and we have exhausted UK a bit at this point.

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 02/02/2019 21:56

I used to feel a little like this, but I can see the beauty in the UK and am considering a holiday in Dorset in the Summer. I have been doing Center Parcs holidays the last couple of years and love it! Center Parcs is pricey and quite middle class I think.

LEMtheoriginal · 02/02/2019 21:57

We never go abroad. We are restricted by budget and as such we camp and as a result go away two to three times a year.

There is no way i could afford a UK holiday in school holiday times so if we didn't camp we'd have to settle for a package holiday abroad - far cheaper.

A college holiday in August? My face would be Envy

greenpop21 · 02/02/2019 22:00

We used to go to Brittany when the DC were small. The lack of traffic, ample free parking at glorious half empty beaches was an eye opener compared to over crowded Cornwall in August. A bit of a halfway house, weather and cost wise.

OrangeSamphire · 02/02/2019 22:03

My in-laws do. But they are social climbing nouveau-riche types.

On my side of the family, and amongst my school peers, holidays we’re typically Cornwall in the summer (until we moved here), Scotland in the spring, skiing or long haul winter holiday. It wouldn’t occur to me to ‘look down’ on anyone’s holiday, be that a windswept old cottage on the Yorkshire moors or a sunny apartment in Spain.

But I do know there is a type that does. The PILs are absolutely dreadful for this. Mind you, they were extremely negative about us moving to Cornwall too and couldn’t understand why we had no desire to move to Surrey instead Hmm

Fantababy · 02/02/2019 22:07

I wouldn't judge but am staggered at some of the prices for UK holidays. I'd quite like to do a self catering UK holiday but feel, like others, that you're cheaper going abroad for guaranteed weather.

Reading this thread, however, I feel it's holidays abroad that are being looked down on. Most of the snobbiest comments are directed to resort holidays abroad.

brizzledrizzle · 02/02/2019 22:07

Let them look down on it, it means those of us who have UK holidays get less crowded tourist places and a better choice of holiday accommodation.

MrsApplepants · 02/02/2019 22:08

I wouldn’t look down on anyone for holidaying in the UK, it’s none of my business. But for me it would seem a waste of precious annual leave. It’s a big world out there, life is short, so I try to see as much of it as I can, so a holiday to me is seeing places that are not on my doorstep.

icannotremember · 02/02/2019 22:10

Yes, some people do. But honestly, why would you care what someone else thinks of your holiday? I enjoy our holidays in the UK very much, as do the dc and dh- what matters apart from that?

Buggerbuggerbuggerargh · 02/02/2019 22:24

I hate holidays abroad tbh. They were fine before ds (though I still got terrible travel anxiety). But flying with a toddler and then spending my entire time away chasing said toddler round a pool and rubbing suncream into him every twenty minutes? No thanks.

I don't like hot weather either so I'm quite happy with a UK holiday. When he gets a bit bigger we'll take him abroad more but at the age he is now there is no benefit imo to doing so.

Dothehappydance · 02/02/2019 22:27

I only holiday in the UK. People have asked why not abroad but never looked down on me. They find it mildly amusing that I keep going back to the same places though. I do find that some areas are seen as more desirable though, my holidays in Northumbria are better than the east coast of Yorkshire, but I guess you get that with any destination.

Laughing at the notion that Devon is MC. We went every year and my parents still do as you can easily get there by train. We are going this year to join them (pushing the boat out a bit there) as it will have been 11years since I last went and I miss it.

Some say life is too short to not go abroad, I say life is too short to go abroad. Wink

Yes they do. We don't always go abroad and to be honest if you could guarantee the weather in this country I would probably rarely go abroad.

Tanfastic · 02/02/2019 22:38

And our holidays in this country rarely cost much less!

ILoveMarmiteToo · 02/02/2019 22:43

I love both TBH. Have a week in Corfu to look forward to as well as a week in Devon 😎

Dothehappydance · 02/02/2019 23:09

I could never go abroad for less than we pay in the UK. Far enough the likes of CP etc is really expensive but there is many more places to go.

We are away at Easter, 5 of us less than £600 for the week. Just clicked on an advert on here, random holiday, random TA, but it was 3x that by the time I added on the extras. a.k.a essentials.

AlessandroVasectomi · 02/02/2019 23:14

If people do look down on UK holidays, it tells you a lot about why they holiday where they do. How often do you overhear “Oh we went to St Lucia. Wonderful place. You haven’t been? Oh you must....” or similar

BlueCornishPixie · 02/02/2019 23:20

I think some people do but I also think they tend to be twats so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also I have never had an abroad holiday that works out cheaper than a UK holiday all in.

What someone else does in their holiday is absolutely none of my business really. Even all the posters saying "I wouldn't judge but..", that's still a judgement and it's still unnecessary. What you personally enjoy is completely irrelevent. Its really not that hard to grasp that people have different tastes.

I've had some wonderful UK holidays, and some good abroad ones too. Generally I find my UK ones are more likely to be good, I get stressed easily abroad but that's just me.

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2019 23:20

From what I gather, yes. Which is stupid as it's actually usually more expensive.

WarmthAndDepth · 02/02/2019 23:30

Such a shame people even have to worry about this, don't you think?
The lens is wrong.
A holiday in the UK is a responsible choice with a much smaller carbon footprint than 'going somewhere hot'.
I wouldn't ever judge someone's holiday choice based on how much money they may have spent on said holiday. But I do Hmm at people who regularly fly on holiday given where we're at with the climate.

blue25 · 02/02/2019 23:43

I do struggle to understand people who have zero interest in exploring the world and visiting new places. In my experience these people can be quite narrow minded and dull.

I love both uk holidays and holidays abroad. Exploring new countries is important to me though.

leaveby10 · 03/02/2019 00:01

I like to mix it up - could not do the same thing every year - don't need sunshine every day but the thought of going to the same place every year leaves me cold but loads of people do it and seem to enjoy it.

NerrSnerr · 03/02/2019 02:57

In my circle most people go on holiday in the U.K. We have small children and with childcare fees etc it's just not feasible to go abroad.

Many people go to Butlins, go camping or in a cottage somewhere. We have booked our holiday, we'll be camping as it's all we can afford in the summer holidays.
