Does anyone have DC who required anaesthetic in infancy?

DC is nearly 1 and will likely need an MRI under general anaesthetic soon. We're aware of the studies about early exposure and cognition, white matter, behaviour etc but understand these suggest a small risk (if any). It sounds like the MRI will be around an hour but I've heard of them being up to three hours for infants with a similar condition!

I think in this case the value of early intervention would outweigh this risk and that is why our consultant has decided not to wait but for reassurance it would be great to hear from other parents of children under anaesthesia at an early age

It's possible she could also need surgery, depending on results of MRI, but I think (hope) it's unlikely at this age.

Thank you

DS1 did. He's likely autistic but it's nothing to do with the scan and everything to do with me having ADHD.

looktothewesternsky · 02/02/2019 18:10

I had 4 generals before I was 8; and another 3 between 8-20.

I'm 34, pregnant, well paid, married and fine! You're overthinking. Good luck for the MRI.

Deepbloos · 02/02/2019 19:08

han01uk Retinoblastoma? Same here Flowers

My DC have had around 60 general anaesthetics prior to being 7 years old. One DC has autism but no link there whatsoever. No I'll effects to either of them.

It's a horrid time for the parents, I understand.

Ds had GA at 15 months to correct a problem with his hand. He was fine, running round the next day like nothing happened.
I'm biased but think he is pretty bright. He started reception this September already reading fluently, is in top group for literacy, maths and writing. His behaviour, well, he's pretty much your typical 5 year old but generally good!
Good luck with the mri.

fleshmarketclose · 02/02/2019 19:30

Ds had a general anaesthetic at eight months as he had intussusception. He was later classed as profoundly gifted so obviously didn't affect his intelligence adversely.

Auntpetunia2015 · 02/02/2019 19:33

I had GA at 4 days old 50 odd years ago. I’m fine.

Lightsdown · 02/02/2019 19:36

Dd had one at 2 yrs - never has at registered with me that this was a thing - she is a very healthy, intelligent super sporty happy girl!

brownmare · 02/02/2019 19:38

My daughter had regular GA's to have a central line fitted and weekly lumbar punctures and regular bone marrow samples over along period of time aged two (leukaemia). No lasting effects and a healthy 28 year old now! I hope all goes well with your little one.

jobbymcginty · 02/02/2019 19:51

My ds had a general at 3 months old he's now 12 and top of his class with a very high IQ

queenofthemountains · 02/02/2019 19:53

My daughter had had 9 operations by the age 9. I feel she has had issues from them. Each GA seemed to put her back about 6 months in her development, it was immediately noticeable, milestones passed were forgotten. I'd say now she's about 4-5 years behind.
I'd be interested in this study.

Lavenderdays · 02/02/2019 20:03

DD had an operation at around one years old under anaesthetic, she is extremely bright.

Zoflorabore · 02/02/2019 20:05

Ds had a GA at 4 weeks old for pyloric stenosis, he was fine and is a strapping 6ft 2" 15 year old now.

Easier said than done but try not to worry.

Southwest12 · 02/02/2019 20:17

My friends daughter had her first GA at less than 24 hours old, and has had lots more since. She’s a normal stroppy teenager. No ill effects at all.

GalacticChickenShit · 02/02/2019 20:21

My DC had repeated attempts at a lumbar puncture at 5 days old.
I'm fuzzy about a lot of it but assume anesthetic would have been administered beforehand.

Wellhellojonsnow · 02/02/2019 20:48

Just after DS’s first bday he got admitted to hospital with complications of pneumonia. He had emergency surgery followed by another op (longest one lasted a few hours).

He’s now 4 - very bright, social and well(ish behaved) Smile.

Try not to worry Flowers

StillMedusa · 02/02/2019 21:05

DS1 had one at 4 hours old! He's fine . Not mensa maybe but a decent young man with a respectable job and a gifted musician.
DS2 had quite a few between age 0-2 but he has disabilities (hence the ops/ Mris) from birth.

han01uk · 02/02/2019 23:03

Deepbloos - yes,hi...long,painful,lonely journey...hope your little ones are doing ok now 🤗

CatsRule · 02/02/2019 23:16

My dad had a general anaesthetic for an MRI at the age of 2 and he was fine. I actually found it hard watching him get the anaesthetic but he was fine, and it was over in an hour or so. The MRI itself I believe was less than an hour, but it was an hour or so before we saw him again. It will be tougher on you than it will be on her!

TheOwlSong · 03/02/2019 09:01

Thank you and I'm sorry to hear of all the procedures your little ones have gone through. That really puts it in perspective

It's possible we might have several surgeries ahead of us or we might be able to avoid it depending on how things go so I will keep my fingers crossed but I do find it helpful to understand all the risks etc as we go so that I know we are always doing the right thing
