Sinus relief?

anxious62 · 02/02/2019 15:47

I have a cold which in itself isn’t bad. Thing is it’s in my sinuses and it’s agony. Any suggestions for relief?

Sudafed not really working.

Head over hot water not working.

Neilmed Sinus rinse is brilliant for clearing all the gunk Envy. Also menthol crystals are great for steaming.

LeonoraFlorence · 02/02/2019 15:54

I find a cool ice pack on the worst parts gives me some relief too.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 02/02/2019 15:55

Otrivine. Best stuff in the world, ever!!

I always find Sinutab is much more effective than Sudafed - you have to get it from the pharmacy, but it always works for me.

ems137 · 02/02/2019 16:06

If your nose is stuffy try Sudafed spray.

Other than that the over the counter Sudafed tablets are the best to buy.

I know people suggest steam inhalation but it's only a very temporary relief for me

Another vote for striving. Amazing stuff!

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 02/02/2019 16:20

Not striving, otrivine!

Thecrown3 · 02/02/2019 18:38

Sinutab all the way.
I’ve converted at least 3 ppl at work after they had tried all the above suggestions Grin seems to get rid of the dizziness an earache too I get with it occasionally

ginghamstarfish · 02/02/2019 18:41

Agree with sinus rinse, Neilmed bottle or a neti pot. Do it every day when you feel sinus trouble coming on and it does help.

Surfingtheweb · 02/02/2019 19:54

Another vote for the sinus rinse

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 19:56

Grab a nasal spray. Nose clear on seconds. Just be careful it is so easy to become dependent.

FutureMrsTempah · 02/02/2019 20:04

Press with your thumb between your eyebrows and with your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Will help drain them

toomuchfaster · 02/02/2019 20:13

Decongestant tabs can make it worse, rebound congestion is awful. I would give them all a miss and use steam inhalation, a saline nasal spray, massage, vaporub or all of the above!!

Stardustinmyeyes · 02/02/2019 20:22

I have a similar problem and I can't take decongestantsbecause of my medication for high blood pressure.
Neti pot is great, strange to use but really good when you get the hang of it. The finger between your eyebrows and tongue on the roof of your mouth is good. Also massaging the sides of your nose where it meets your cheekbones is good.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 02/02/2019 22:07

Actifed tablets from the pharmacy and a steroid nasal spray such as Pirinase should help ease things.

PoptartPoptart · 02/02/2019 22:41

Nurofen Plus (ibuprofen & codeine) are the only thing that takes the pain of sinus pressure/headaches away for me. You can buy them over the counter at a pharmacy.
They won’t unblock your sinuses if you are very stuffed up, you’ll need a spray such as otrivine for that, but they do reduce swelling and inflammation inside the nose and act as a very good painkiller.

SlipperyLizard · 02/02/2019 22:53

Sinus rinse twice a day plus beconase nasal spray. I seem to get a sinus infection after the mildest cold, and this is my go to when Sudafed spray stops working (and I realise it is no longer a cold).

MitziK · 02/02/2019 23:00

Sudafed from the chemist, not the shelf. It's a different active ingredient that actually works, plus a warm sinus rinse made from cooled, boiled water and preferably the NeilMed Sinus rinse but if not available, salt. Don't bother paying the extra for caffeine and painkiller mixed in, just take the Psuedo with two paracetamol and a coffee.

Steam makes the blood vessels expand more, which cuts down the space in the cavity - which is already hurting like hell because of the infection/congestion - so is a really bad idea.

Plus a cold pack. Shrink down the blood vessels and it's easier to get the gunk out.

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 23:01

snorting water

littlemisscynical · 02/02/2019 23:01

Someone on here a couple of weeks ago recommended a homemade sinus rinse. A cup of warm water (I used cooled boiled) with a teaspoon of baking soda and salt. You can snort it out of the palm of your hand. Or use a syringe if you have one. Magic. It cured me. I was at the point of going to the docs.

DustyMcDustbuster · 02/02/2019 23:04

Def get the Neilmed sinus rinse pack. Do it twice a day, religiously. I use a steroid nasal spray prescribed, but only after nasal rinse.

anxious62 · 03/02/2019 10:48

Thanks everyone. I’ve YouTubed nasal cleaning 😮. Feeling a bit better today as I can breathe a bit.

If the 'whacked round the face with a baseball bat' feeling is still there in another day or two, then you could have sinusitis so it might be worth seeing a GP.

DGRossetti · 03/02/2019 11:16

Sinus rinse is the gold standard, IMHO failing that; Friars balsalm in hot water as a vapour bath.
