Tummy time tips?

Dd is 10 weeks and absolutely hates tummy time. If she’s on her tummy for more than 1-2 min, she shrieks like I’ve left her on the hillside! I do let her rest on my chest and hold her up over my shoulder so she is getting some neck exercise but I read she’s meant to be getting 30 min or so of tummy time every day? Tried lying with her and a baby mirror but doesn’t seem to help. What else can we do? Don’t want her to not be able to roll over!

Try and give her something to play with and put it in front of her to distract her.

Also some babies are non-rollers anyway

littlemisscynical · 02/02/2019 10:50

Are you putting something under her chest to support her a bit? A rolled up towel or small pillow

PoutySprout · 02/02/2019 10:52

Babies don’t need tummy time.

My two are teens now but I don't remember this huge fuss about tummy time when they were little. They still learnt to roll, sit, stand and walk at the right times.

donajimena · 02/02/2019 11:02

It was a thing when mine were babies (now teens) my advice? Don t bother. Seriously. My first screamed when I tried it. We didn't do it again.

Cardiffclare88 · 02/02/2019 11:19

I was told by GP and Hv that it was important?

I wouldn't fret about it. Keep trying but if she doesn't like it, she'll be fine

mistermagpie · 02/02/2019 11:30

I genuinely don't think it's that important. I did it a lot with DS1 (against his will mainly) and he was very late to walk and is still behind his peers in terms of physical ability at 3.5.

I sort of forgot to focus on it with DS2 and that boy is like a machine physically, he did everything early and is really really strong and capable.

I'm not sure tummy time really does much...

mistermagpie · 02/02/2019 11:31

Janet Lansbury is a great resource btw, lots of interesting stuff against sitting babies up, helping them to walk etc. I followed her with DS2 and he absolutely has thrived physically.

SherlockSays · 02/02/2019 11:31

I've just discovered this - too late at DD is 6 months and sits up now but she too was a hater of tummy time and likes to play on this now.

I paid £4 for one on marketplace so worth a look!

Zoe2411 · 02/02/2019 11:33

I wouldn't worry too much . Shes 10 weeks old not 10 months , she will be rolling before you know it and you'll think back to when she stayed still and you could get some bits done without her half way across the room ! :) x

TwigTheWonderKid · 02/02/2019 11:36

I used to put DS1 on the edge of the bed (across the bed iyswim) and then sit on the floor in front of him. He seemed to quite like that. Also he liked lying across my birthing ball and being rolled about.

Having much less time, I didn't do any of that with DS2 and they both had similar developmental progress...

Butteredghost · 02/02/2019 11:39

30 mins every day is a lot! Just do what baby is happy with, if that's 1-2 mins that's fine.

Jackshouse · 02/02/2019 14:09

It does not have to be in one go. Have you tried getting on the floor and facing her and singing songs/chatting? Sling time also builds up her core.

MaverickSnoopy · 02/02/2019 15:16

When I had DC1 I did lots of tummy time. She didn't sit until 9 months and didn't crawl until she was 1. Did less with DC2 due to less time, she sat at 6 months. Now have DC3. She's lucky if I do a few mins of tummy time more than 3 times a week. We'll see how she turns out.

I really wouldn't worry about it and just do what you feel most comfortable with.

mogtheexcellent · 02/02/2019 15:23

I used to sit on the sofa or bed with my knees bent and DD lying up my legs with her head over my knees (hope this makes sense). She hated lying on the floor.

GunpowderGelatine · 02/02/2019 15:26

Honestly I wouldn't bother. She will manage to sit up etc and roll over eventually without tummy time. My 2 hated it as well!

GunpowderGelatine · 02/02/2019 15:28

I was told by GP and Hv that it was important?

It's not like she will be 18 and lying flat on her back still because she never had tummy time Grin it's really not important, she'll get there, but I appreciate as a new mum it's easy to fret about these things (and don't think HCPs always help). Is this your first baby OP?

Byebyefriend · 02/02/2019 15:28

Have you got a sling? It counts as tummy time.

couldbeanywhere · 02/02/2019 15:38

You holding the baby on her front against you is enough. Tummy time is really a phrase coined for those parents who are inclined to leave their babies in their cribs and on their backs all day. By holding your baby on your front , or by using a sling your baby will be using it’s neck muscles and avoiding getting a flat head!

Fiddie · 02/02/2019 15:44

What's tummy time? That didn't exist when I had any of my DCs.

Is it something else to fret about?

norbert23 · 02/02/2019 15:45

My daughter hated tummy time so I took her to be weighed every week and put her on her tummy there around all the exciting toys / people etc. Just for short bursts but it made me feel better. What also made me feel better was one of the surestart staff asked if I knew any adults who couldn't lift up their own head 😀 that helped me feel more chilled about it x
