Going skiing in the Alps in a month or so with a 5 yr old (lessons booked) and 2 yr old. DH has been before, I haven't. What do I need to know and what is the bare minimum of stuff I have to buy, in case I hate it and we never go again?

We put our 3 year old into a crèche in resort and they needed to see their red vaccination booklet so I would definitely take that for both children in case you need to use it for both. Luckily, I checked before traveling otherwise we would have had problems.

Just to add an opposing opinion - I skied without lessons. Started on the baby slopes after watching some youtube tutorials and progressed from there by mainly watching others. I'm not sporty but I do have good balance. By my third holiday/week I was comfortably on red slopes. Maybe without good form, but having fun safely!

Not wishing to be a worrywort, take a longish skirt and thick tights.

On my first skiing trip I allowed myself to be persuaded to try a blue run as I’d “done so well” on the nursery slopes, screwed my cruciate ligament, leg in plaster. Had to borrow a mini skirt and tights from a tiny friend, wore one leg of the tights, the other leg kept the top of my cast warm(

Really good gloves.

Second and third getting really strong sun screen, make sure noses, foreheads and, especially, ears are covered.

Decent hat plus something soft to wear around your neck, ski jackets can rub, I had a snood that I could pull up if necessary, plus a headband for my ears. What you wear will depend on whether it’s sunny or dull, you need to allow for both.

Goggles are are a good idea.

As a learner, never go off the baby slopes without an instructor!!!
