I know it's something to do with misspelling but don't know what?

It just means what you have copied is the original error and not yours

HappyGoLuckyGo · 02/02/2019 01:12

It’s someone quoting a misspelling. As in, making it clear they know the original text has a typo in it.

Bowchicawowow · 02/02/2019 01:12

It’s when you are quoting someone and acknowledging they made a mistake.

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/02/2019 01:13

It means, I'm quoting this, including the original error, which is not mine and of which I am aware.
I don't know why it means that, though.

chocolatebrazilnut · 02/02/2019 01:15

I don’t think it has to be a mis-spelling. It can be any kind of error AFAIK.

ssd · 02/02/2019 01:15

Thank you so much everyone

I always assumed it stood for 'spelling is copied' as in they've copied it from the original quote and are aware it is incorrect.

VimFuego101 · 02/02/2019 01:18

I thought it was Latin for 'thus' (showing that the writer had copied it as it was written originally, including the error).

Bloodybridget · 02/02/2019 01:22

No, it's not an acronym, it's Latin for "thus", so shorthand for "this is how it was written in the original". And yes, can be used for any spelling or grammatical error.

MrsTerryPratcett · 02/02/2019 01:22

What they said, from the Latin.

Oddcat · 02/02/2019 01:23

Square brackets are most commonly used around the word 'sic' (from the Latin 'sicut', meaning 'just as'), to explain the status of an apparent mistake.

Bloodybridget · 02/02/2019 01:25

Ha, VimFuego, love it that you and I are both awake (assuming we are in the same time zone) simultaneously explaining Latin (from simul: at once) Wink

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/02/2019 02:12

And thank you all for the explanations. :)

VimFuego101 · 02/02/2019 11:08

I'm in the US @Bloodybridget Smile it's exciting when the Latin classes I took at school come in useful for something!

Bloodybridget · 02/02/2019 20:15

@VimFuego101 I have just started a Latin class. It's very sad how much I've forgotten since I scraped through an exam in 1970!
