If you don't live alone, what is the earliest you can go to bed with a straight face?

Also included in the caveats:

Not working shifts
Not pregnant, breast feeding or looking after a child under 2 years old
Not ill or disabled
Not entertaining guests

I could honestly go to bed now! (before 9pm UK time). I know that's nuts when there's nothing wrong with me, and my family would question me and make a fuss if I headed up the wooden hill now. They will be up until 11, 12, 1am.

I just wish I could do it without having to explain myself.

Anytime past 9 is considered ok here. Dh and I are quite similar so we're happy for early nights. Teenage Dd is often surprised when we shout "night" as she's usually got to have a shower etc.
I'm struggling now but I'm trying to last otherwise I'll be up at the crack of dawn.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/02/2019 21:16

OP are you actually being social with them now? Or is it just some sort of herd mentality? If you're tired, sleep!

IWouldLikeToKnow · 01/02/2019 21:17

I'm in bed around 9 most night. Read for a bit and asleep well before 10. Husband doesn't come up till 11/12

toastfiend · 01/02/2019 21:17

Normally eke it out until 9pm, but DH wouldn't raise an eyebrow if I was knackered and wanted to go to bed at 8pm or earlier. I'm a grown up and won't have a bed time dictated to me. My parents do think we go to bed exceptionally early when we stay with them though, but they're usually up until around midnight, which I just cannot fathom! Our only limitation is the dogs as they need to go out for a last wee at night and are used to doing that around 10pm ish, they're fine to go a bit earlier on occasion, though.

We have a newborn now so think bedtimes are going to be hugely random once we're home from hospital. I shall look back on my 8pm bedtimes for long stints of unbroken sleep with great fondness I am sure!

PlumCakeChica · 01/02/2019 21:17

In this weather 9pm is no problem for me. We’re all shattered by Friday anyway. Gives me a good excuse to get the teens to bed at a reasonable time. I don’t sleep until 10.30/11 though. Read or watch iPlayer under the duvet in peace - bliss!

Sforsh49 · 01/02/2019 21:18

Have been known to go at 7:30 before now, often have a pre-nap nap on the sofa before I go up, usually between 9:30-10. No kids, just me, DH and DDog, do work 10 hour days so out the house for 11-12 hours though

BlueGlasses · 01/02/2019 21:20

I went to bed at 8.30pm the other night. Have been known to disappear to bed at 7.30pm. My husband and kids are used to my strange ways now! But then I'm also an early bird. Have no trouble getting up and always awake before the alarm.

sparklefarts · 01/02/2019 21:25

Honestly OP if you're tired; go to bed. This is so bizarre!

Bloodybridget · 01/02/2019 21:25

I was trying to watch Quantum of Solace this evening, managed about 40 minutes but had to give up because I knew I couldn't last till 10.20. I've just got into my pyjamas and am aiming to do another ten minutes while my bed warms up!

BentNeckLady · 01/02/2019 21:28

I quite often tell DH I’m going for a bath at 7pm which is my secret code for I’m going to have a quick bath and then going to bed. Sometimes needs must!

WoollyMummoth · 01/02/2019 21:33

I have found my people! I’m regularly in bed by 9. I love my bed so much! It’s comfy and a great place to read. It’s lovely and quiet too, I work in quite a noisy environment so it’s bliss. DHand DCs are real night owls but they’re used to me stoping off as they settle down to watch a film.

MulticolourMophead · 01/02/2019 21:38

My bedtime varies so much. Depends on if I'm working next day, watching something, etc.

I'd quite happily take myself off early, say 8pm, if I just wanted to laze. I only actually sleep early if I was felling crap. But otherwise, there's something about curling up under the duvet on a night like this (alone, bliss) while reading a book with a cuppa in my travel cup (to avoid spillages).

OTOH, I had a couple of times over the Xmas period where I binge watched some chinese tv (subtitled), and found myself still watching at 4:30am! I wasn't getting up the next day so it wasn't a problem, as I do try to be careful.

Right now, I have the lounge to myself, watching the rugby and curled up on the sofa wrapped in a blanket. Both DCs have gone to their rooms, for a change. They don't bother with the rugby, although DD is videocalling her BF. I'll be going up after the match.

It's much better than when I was with Ex. If I went up first, no problem, but he hated me staying up later than him unless he'd gone up because he was unwell. Even he could see the stupidity of expecting me to go to bed at the same time when it was 6pm.

And there's another try for Wales Grin.

At the moment 10 is late for me.
I sleep far too much. I stayed up until 1am the other night morning and felt amazing the next day. Really awake. Until tiredness hit and I was in bed by 8.30pm 😂

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/02/2019 21:49

If I didn’t have to wait up for my eldest child getting home from band practice I would have been in bed at half eight when I put the younger two to their beds.

As it is, I’m hanging on until I can lock up. Soon though, so soon!

Sloppychops · 01/02/2019 21:51

My 3 generally go up at 9 at the earliest and I can't really go up before they do. If it was up to me I'd go up at half 8 quite often....

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/02/2019 21:51

My kids are teenagers, they are night owls as is dh and none of them care about that I go to bed what they would consider early evening!

I go to bed when I want, stuff what anyone else thinks anyway. They are used to me though, I am the only early bird in the house and none of this is new.

It’s a bit sad you don’t feel able to do as you please op.

1wokeuplikethis · 01/02/2019 22:02

You all go so early! I’m jealous.

I tend to go to bed at 11 and think I’ll read for a bit, then get really into my book and see it’s midnight and think oh no, I’m going to be so tired tomorrow. Think tomorrow I’m going to bed at 9 to read for ages.

The problem is, I have young kids who frequently wake in the night and it’s superstitious but the rare night that I’m asleep before 10:30 seem to be the worst for having to get up to them through the night.

My husband is stunned if I announce I’m off to bed before 10:30pm. You’re going to bed? Now?! It’s early! He stays up til 1am most nights, and he disturbs me every single night.

I’m so tired. I’m so TIRED.

Right, you lot have convinced me to go to bed now. When I’ve finished my gin.

irregularegular · 01/02/2019 22:23

I've never headed to bed before 10 in my adult life. With the possibly exception of the very early newborn stage. Just wouldn't consider it an option. Though I have been known to fall asleep on the sofa ...

Racheyg · 01/02/2019 22:27

I often fall asleep reading to dcs. I wake after 20 mins or so, stay up for a bit and I'm often in bed at 10.00ish although we have a tv so I sometimes watch that or Mumsnet ☺️
