Does this sound like the menopause to you?

I’m 42 and feeling pretty rubbish at the moment. I’ve got the mirena coil so don’t really have any periods ( although plenty of PMT!) I feel like I’m always knackered. I seem to get about 2 migraines a week and sundry other aches and pains. I’ve no libido to speak off either. But no hot flushes (yet)

I have 2 young DCs but they pretty much sleep through now. I only work one day a week ( although its a very full on 12 hour shift) and work from home about another half a day. 3 days a week I potter about with pre school DS and do housework/ school run etc so I don’t think I should feel this run down.

Does this sound familiar?

It's a bit vague. How much do you tick all of the other healthy lifestyle things (no smoking, minimal alcohol, get plenty of exercise, minimal junk food, sleep well, don't overwork, etc)

There are numerous symptoms of the peri-menopause that vary from person to person.
Check with your mother when she went through hers . Maybe get thyroid checked out ?

slipways · 01/02/2019 18:55

Thyroid levels are a good one to have checked with a blood test, underactive thyroidism is fairly common esp in women. Low vit B12 too is also possible, can cause fatigue.
Could you have some quality time off for yourself, to recover a little?

Could be low iron. Most women are iron deficient by this age.

lljkk · 02/02/2019 05:30

Not accurate to say most (UK) middle aged women are iron deficient. It's actually the lowest risk age to be iron deficient for adult women. Although can be under-diagnosed, iron deficiency can be asymptomatic.

Do you take a multivitamin?

I'd take something like this for a few weeks.
www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/285513527
(contains iron so take with your main meal to avoid nausea)

That'll hit your Iron/vit D/B12. See if you feel any better, if not, as PP
said doctor for thyroid.

Other thought is that migraines can be caused by hormonal contraception, though I thought Mirena was supposed to be low-dose...?
Another one for the doctor .

Hi
I’m 43.last year ( but every year before that for a couple) I couldn’t cope with December to March, I would feel at deaths door , always Ill too.
I work outside all year too.
Thought I was just one of those who suffered s.a.d, had the lamp , read all the advice etc. Then in August last year I started to feel the same.
Went to docs had full bloods done, turns out I had zero vit d in my body and borderline result for thyroid issue.
After the summer we had had and working out in it my vit d should have been excellent !
Prescribed vit d tablets and will monitor thyroid.
BUT now I’ve been taking prescribed vit d, bought highest strength vit c and b12 and 400mg magnesium ,I feel marvellous for this time of year, for me, in a long time!! I used to feel tired and emotional just at the thought of my day ahead!
So I would say , go to docs, get a blood test done.
Or if unable try a dose of vit d at 1500mg a day ( after research that’s a good maintenance dose for most people ) and 400 mg magnesium ( you mustn’t take vit on own , needs magnesium to balance it) give that 2 months to see.
It’s been a real discovery for me .
