Where does the money come from?

...and couldnt it go to better use?
Game shows.. everyone wins all that money on Tipping Point or The Chase or the Comps on ITV, where does the money come from anf if the tv companies have sll that money why is the country in such a financial mess? 'We've' clearly got money to spare?

Huh? The production company are paid money by the channel to make the tv program. They use some of the money as prize money. The channel makes money from the advertisers that pay to advertise while the program is on.

Not quite sure what any of that process has to do with ‘the country’ not having any money.

Racecardriver · 01/02/2019 18:13

From advertising. The channel sells advertising slots and uses the proceeds to fund shows. If this money was diverted into something else as you suggest then the channels wouldn’t attract viewers and would therefore fail to attract advertisers. As a result there wouldn’t be any money.

popcorndiva · 01/02/2019 18:17

Well the competitions make money as people pay to enter. So a bit like the lottery

Game shows...well comes from the advertisers. People win rarely as well

Because surely that money they get could go to better use? Maybe i didnt word it right. I was only asking. Just wondered how it works.
The cannel get the money from somewhere, the money could be used for other things like charities not prizes on tv shows. So if 5 people on tipping point win £10,000 each in one week, thats alot of money. We dont know what they do with it but I guess they are not giving it to the nhs or homeless shelters etc

Nah.

flamingofridays · 01/02/2019 18:21

You could say that about anyone with surplus cash.

I think what you're envisioning is communism.

HollowTalk · 01/02/2019 18:21

Do you have any idea how television works, OP? How advertising works?

Bestseller · 01/02/2019 18:21

As PPs said its from advertising revenues one way or another and the big prize money shows attract more viewers and therefore more advertising revenue. It's a commercial decision to offer high prize money because it means they make more money.

JasperRising · 01/02/2019 18:23

Well I would imagine they go and buy stuff in shops with some of it which results in the money going into our economy (though we could then get sidelined into where goods are manufactured and whether large companies are avoiding tax)

ScreamingValenta · 01/02/2019 18:23

I'm with you, OP. It was much better back in the old days when the game itself was the main focus and the prize was a token thing - like the Blankety-Blank chequebook and pen.

SoyDora · 01/02/2019 18:23

That’s not really how it works. The money comes from the TV production company. It doesn’t belong to ‘the country’.
Yes it could go to better use. So could the money paid to footballers, and to actors, and the money that sits in the bank accounts of many multi million pound organisations.

WineGummyBear · 01/02/2019 18:24

What a bizarre question!

Everyone has already explained where the money comes from. But you may as well ask why any given person or any organisation doesn't give their £10,000 to the NHS.

Brittanyspears · 01/02/2019 18:25

Google capitalism.

BadLad · 02/02/2019 02:06

I love the way the focus is on the prize money as "all that money that could go to better use", as if that was the most expensive part of the program.

A few grand on Tipping Point isn't going to be much compared to the cost of making the program, including the game show host's salary. If it's a program like The Chase, or Eggheads, the quiz champions aren't going to be appearing for nothing either.

nancy75 · 02/02/2019 02:12

Are you thinking the money is somehow supplied by the general public via our tax or something?

Charity to the NHS should not be a thing - we pay tax to fund it, if it needs more money we should pay more tax, you can’t run a health service on charity donations

AGHHHH · 02/02/2019 02:12

The TV companies have money yeah. Isn't that separate to the government's / country's money?

Lkbbdg · 02/02/2019 03:51

From advertising and premium rate phone lines associated with some shows. On the chase most go home without anything and on the 100,000 drop it's often nothing or not much.

Doyoumind · 02/02/2019 03:58

I'm baffled that you are asking this question, OP. I don't even know where to begin but at least PPs have made a start.

todayiwin · 02/02/2019 03:58

I suggest you live you in a communist country

Your views are warped

Purpleartichoke · 02/02/2019 04:30

Those prize shows tend to be cheaper to produce than scripted television. Wouldn’t the money for tv in general be better spent on other things? Of course, without anyone watching there would be no money in the first place.
