Do you wake up a farting newborn?

DD is 10 weeks, been skipping her overnight poos lately (nappy is full of wee in the morning). Round 5 or 6 she’ll start grizzling and kicking her legs up and I hear her passing wind, but she’s sound asleep, sometimes this is accompanied by a cry or scream but only when passing wind. I reckon her tummy’s just adjusting to the new poo routine. But Do you wake your baby to help with this or is it better to let them sleep and work it out themselves? I’ve just been waiting until she cries a bit more and wakes up a bit more before picking her up, but perhaps that is too long and I worry I’m being a neglectful mum Sad I usually nurse her and try to wind her and do bicycle legs and then she falls back to sleep.

You’re approach is fine. Generally I wouldn’t wake a sleeping baby unless absolutely necessary

ApolloandDaphne · 01/02/2019 06:56

Never wake a sleeping baby if you can help it! If the farting isn't waking her then it is unlikely to be hurting her.

strawberrypenguin · 01/02/2019 06:59

Let her sleep! If she's sleeping through it she's fine.

At 10 weeks her gut will be improving so hopefully you'll find she's less windy. We're a few weeks ahead of you and there is a noticeable improvement! Infacol use has dramatically reduced!

Sexnotgender · 01/02/2019 07:04

Leave her to it! If it’s not actually waking her then leave her be.

00100001 · 01/02/2019 07:07

Let sleeping dogs (and babies!) lie.

secretuser · 01/02/2019 07:12

I'd leave her to it, as they get older they get better at coping with wind themselves, sounds like she's working out what to do!

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/02/2019 07:25

Leave her sleeping but gently hold her legs and cycle them as of she's riding a bike. It will help to release trapped wind and ease any pain.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/02/2019 07:26

Sorry! Ignore me! I skimmed the last part!! You already do bicycle legs do you're doing everything you should!!

Never wake a sleeping, farting baby. You just end up with an awake and grumpy, farting baby.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 01/02/2019 09:16

If you're BFing, eat more garlic. Helps with gut blood flow. Also means visitors don't outstay their welcome. I'm not a nice man.

My eldest used to fart so much at that age I thought the gas pressure would be enough to propel him out of the cot like a rocket! It never used to wake him either.
Still farts aged 8, but blames it on his little brother.

AlpacaPicnic · 01/02/2019 10:32

This is my favourite question ever that has been asked on here!

I don't know anything about babies - other than feed them and don't wake them up when they are asleep!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 01/02/2019 10:33

NEVER wake a sleeping baby.

DH still farts all the time in his sleep and I don't wake him either.

Ozgirl75 · 01/02/2019 11:14

I check on my 6 year old before I go to bed and often release a cloud of fart gas from underneath his duvet Grin

Cardiffclare88 · 02/02/2019 03:48

Thank you everyone. Glad I’m not being a neglectful mum Smile

God no, if they have wind causing them considerable pain they will wake up. Let sleeping babies lie, and fartGrin.
