Sofa ruined carpet

We've had our sofa for just over two years, from a well known three initial retailer. Recently having moved the sofa to clean in between the sections (it's a corner and all the seat sections clip together) and vacuum underneath I've noticed marks on my carpet from where the feet have been.

I've (hopefully) attached a picture showing the staining on my carpet. I've tried my Vax carpet cleaner, Vanish spray and another stain remover I picked up at the supermarket but I can't get the stains from the carpet.

Do you think I'm justified ringing and complaining considering the sofa is only two years old and my carpet is now ruined?

We're not looking at swapping our sofa yet but surely we shouldn't have to factor in a new carpet every time we think about swapping our furniture?

What are the feet made from, ours are like wooden balls so I always put those hard plastic carpet disks underneath them so they don't squash the carpet pile.

BloodyBosch · 02/02/2019 10:59

It's your fault not the sofa company. You have to place plastic discs underneath or off cuts of carpet. All large furniture does this. Wardrobes, drawers, dining tables.
What did you think would happen?

BassAce · 02/02/2019 11:06

I read somewhere once that when that happens you pop an ice cube on the flattened fibres and let it melt.. Its supposed to then be possible to fluff if back up as it dries.

*disclaimer: I only have wooden or slate floors in my house, so no idea if this is true or actually works.

I don't think it should have stained your carpet. I would email them.

MadeForThis · 02/02/2019 11:28

Think it's the staining that op is complaining about. Not the squashed pile.

purplepingu · 03/02/2019 18:03

The pile isn't squashed, it's stained.

There would be no way to put anything under the legs because the legs are right at the edge of the sofa. They're square blocks.

I'll upload a pic later when I'm home.

I haven't rang them yet just because I'm not sure whether I have any grounds to complain or not. But in all my years of owning different sofas I've never had this happen so I have no idea whether they'd laugh me out of the shop yet or not!

That isn’t right or reasonable. But I doubt they’ll take any responsibility two years later when the guarantee has presumably expired.

wowfudge · 04/02/2019 15:49

Looks like wood stain has transferred to the carpet. Do you have insurance? That might be the route to take to get the carpet replaced. You could try matt varnish to seal the sofa feet and sticking felt pads to the underneath so they are not directly in contact with the carpet.

purplepingu · 04/02/2019 16:26

Would a guarantee not cover the actual sofa developing a fault rather than it causing damage to the carpet?

I'm going to give them a ring and see what they say I think. I've just never known it with any other sofa I've had. It's not a cheap carpet either!
