Is this grammatically acceptable to write

I’ve long been a fan of...

Was tempted to namechange and say English wasn’t my first language 😂

I have seen it a few times, but it sounds a bit clunky to me.

I've been a fan of ... for a long time.

Wigeon · 31/01/2019 22:30

Yes, definitely correct, albeit a bit old-fashioned or maybe slightly posh sounding.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/01/2019 22:31

i would write that and i would say it too.

It’s perfectly correct.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 31/01/2019 23:51

I would also say and write this.

Osirus · 31/01/2019 23:52

Yes, it’s fine. My boss is very well spoken and he constructs his sentences like this.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/01/2019 23:53

It's fine. Without a context I'm not sure if it's natural as the construction is a bit archaic.

English teacher here.

Yep - correct if slightly old-fashioned as pp said.

Parthenope · 31/01/2019 23:55

It's perfectly correct. You wouldn't use the contraction 'I've' in the most formal writing, obviously, but the phrase is pretty standard.

VWpurse · 31/01/2019 23:57

Yes, it’s fine. I would write that.

HeronLanyon · 01/02/2019 00:04

It is fine, slightly old fashioned. If I read that from a pupil (I’m a lawyer who reads and drafts court docs daily) I would suggest they rephrase it ‘I’ve been a fan of x for a long time’ or ‘I’ve had a long-standing love of gardening’ ( not good if it is a person as that would sound as though you loved the person).

For some reason if I read that I would think northern/Yorkshire ‘I’ve not long had my tea’ type construction but maybe that’s wrong. I am not from the North.

AmIthatbloodycold · 01/02/2019 01:13

I think I would say that. I didn't realise it was old fashioned

HeronLanyon · 01/02/2019 01:23

I think maybe I didn’t mean ‘old fashioned’ maybe more (now I can’t think how to describe - not ‘mannered’). Slightly less direct than language has become?? I like it - unexpected to my ear which is always interesting.
