DD1s first period

skunkatanka · 31/01/2019 18:48

Can't quite believe how emotional I feel but my lovely dd got her first period tonight. I'm so proud that she took it in her stride and came to tell me. I'm proud that my relationship with her is so much better than the one I had with my mum from who I hid my period, taking pads from my dsis and having a ridiculous amount of accidents because my mum rarely bought me any sanpro.

So, I've sent DH to the shop to buy additional stocks (we have some stuff I've been keeping for her just in case). His list includes more pads, a small wash bag that she can take to school, some special shower gel (just cause it's nice) and some chocolate (because who doesn't want chocs on their period). I've also ordered some period pant thingys which are on their way.
Anything else MNetters?

I think the can has just been kicked down the road for two weeks really. Why would the EU cause problems for a remaining member (Ireland) over a leaving one?

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 18:52

Oh sorry wrong thread! Blush

ilovetvandchocolates · 31/01/2019 18:53

A nice hot water bottle was appreciated by my daughter, also painkillers! You're a great mum :)

Thanks so much for that. I know that I'm not always the best at being open about such things with my daughters (blame my upbringing for that) but have tried really hard to get over it and be honest with her. It feels like such a milestone that she handled it so well.

Hot water bottle is a great idea.

How old is your DD?

skunkatanka · 31/01/2019 18:55

She's just 12.

I wish you were my Mum.

I can remember exactly what my Mum did/didn’t do. It stays with us.

No advice but just to say you’re ace and you should be proud of yourself too Smile

ScarlettDarling · 31/01/2019 20:07

It's a weird feeling isn't it op? My dd started back in the summer, she's only 11 and neither of us was expecting it. She cried a bit at first because she didn't want it to happen but she now takes it in her stride.

She doesn't like talking about it so I just keep the cupboard stocked up with pads. When I try to bring it up (I don't think she's changing pads often enough as she's had lots of leaks,) she just gets embarrassed, so it's a bit of a sensitive subject.

Well done on being a lovely mum. Like yours, my mum was a bit useless at helping me with periods and hardly ever bought me pads. She was great in most other ways so I've never quite understood why she was weird about periods!

Hope you told dh to get chocolate for you too? And wine??

skunkatanka · 31/01/2019 20:10

I'm recovering from an op so can't have chocs or wine sadly but I'll have a cup of tea!! Thanks for your lovely words.

You sound lovely. ☺️. My DD is only 9 but I often think about this. I was 11 when I started so she hopefully has a few years to go but she is aware of what periods are and knows it will happen to her at some point. Even when I was young I had horrific cramps and heavy periods so a hot water bottle was the only think that really soothed me and I remember my mum getting up in the night and getting one for me.

Raera · 31/01/2019 20:36

Well done lovely mum.
I was 13, DD1 was 14, but DD2 barely 10 started on the day of the interschools netball tournament. They won!

skunkatanka · 31/01/2019 21:11

Wow Raera! I do worry about sporty stuff to be honest. My dd dances lots and wears leotards. That's why I've bought the pants for her- I'm hoping they'll make it easy for her to cope.

OP posts:
MissWimpyDimple · 31/01/2019 21:36

Which pants did you get? DD is 12 and not yet started but I can see it's not far off. She favours shorts-style pants and I haven't found any like that yet. She's also pretty slim so would have be about a size 4-6 I would guess. Any recommendations?

TheBigFatMermaid · 31/01/2019 21:57

My DD goes away regularly with an organised thing she does. I have been sending her with supplies for the last year, with instructions to share, should anyone need it, as women help each other.

She was so happy last July to be able to help two girls who had come one while away and had nothing with them.

Of course she got more supplies when she went away in October. She rang me one night to tell me she had started, I asked if she was ok and she replied 'Yes thanks Mum, the girls in the dorm have helped me'.

I think having been open and chatting about periods like the every day thing they are helped with this, and you have probably done the same OP!

It is an emotional time for a mum though!

waxygoodness · 31/01/2019 22:21

Have a look at Modibodi and Shethinx period pants. I've bought some for my DD, she'll soon be 10 and we were both a bit shocked that she had a bit of spotting before Christmas, nothing since though but we're now prepared. I like the idea of period pants so she won't have to deal with changing pads at school. I've bought some to trail and really like them, they are v expensive though. One thing that helped my DD was when I said that all women go through this, from pop stars to actresses that she likes, we all just get on with things. She decided from that point that she would too Smile

skunkatanka · 31/01/2019 22:39

I've ordered the Modibodi ones. She's amazed me with her coolness to it all. I just wish it had happened on Friday night so she was at home tomorrow rather than having to juggle it all at school straight away. She goes to an all girls school so I'm hoping there'll be a lot of help for her if she needs it tomorrow.

MissWimpyDimple · 01/02/2019 09:39

Thanks the BTWN shorty ones look good. I think I'll order a couple and see how they are. 3 pairs for just shy of £50 😱

ScarlettDarling · 01/02/2019 19:27

Has anyone bought the Thinx btwn for their dd? I'm wondering what the sizing is like? My almost 12 year old is tall but slim, was thinking of ordering the 13-14.

tastylancs · 02/02/2019 08:12

I'm so glad you posted OP, this has been on my mind for a while. My DD is 10 and has been getting cramps, we've chatted a lot and she's not thrilled by periods, horrified by tampons. So those modibodi pants are a revelation! Going to make up a treat pack for her with pants and other suggestions from this post.

skunkatanka · 02/02/2019 16:37

Have to say, the pants arrived today (amazing service) and she's gone off to her dance class in a leotard and them feeling very happy. I wish they'd had such things when I was young!

OP posts:
ScarlettDarling · 02/02/2019 19:57

What is the modibodi sizing like op?

Mrsfrumble · 02/02/2019 21:04

You sound fab OP.

Like others on this thread, my own mum struggled to talk to me about periods. When mine started it took me all day to pluck up the courage to tell her, and I never had enough sanpro as it obviously didn’t occur to her that my periods were much longer and heavier than hers. DD is only 6 but I hope I can be so open and supportive when the time comes. Your DD is lucky!

millimat · 02/02/2019 21:27

I've never heard of period pants? DD started last month - she's 15 so think it was a relief for her #

Snowmaggedon · 02/02/2019 21:53

What are period pants?
Are pads different sizes for young girls? What age would they use tampons.
I can't remember and I went off tampons about 20 years ago. Just use pads. (my dd is 11) nothing yet but just wondering
