Dip tablet in houmous. We have been alternating between standard and a smoked variety. Both are recieved into the gaping maw with much enthusiasm.

My dog is stupid. If you make enough fuss about him being a good boy before giving it to him he thinks it's a treat and wolfs it down.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2019 08:16

Perhaps he just isn't middle class enough... 🤔 I'm so ashamed...

bengalcat · 31/01/2019 08:17

Lol - mine likes avocados 🥑

My dog will eat anything he can. Socks, grass, joints of meat, batches of scones and tablets.
Good gracious, even Asda sells hummus these days.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/01/2019 08:21

My cats like hummus, which I think is weird and they certainly don't need to eat anything fart producing. I might try it next time they need tablets, but I think they will be wise to this ruse.

Btw, I know it was a joke, but 'hummus being a middle class food' is utterly baffling. It's very cheap and just normal food in the Mediterranean, so why it's seen as something poncy and middle class in the UK, I will never understand.

But, we like jokes, here's my contribution:

How to give a cat a pill, and a dog too.

RedForShort · 31/01/2019 08:23

ha!

I did wonder what the heck a middle class dog was before I opened the thread.

I have tablet difficulties with my cat. But I fear my problem cannot be resolved by hummus or avocados. Hed turn his nose up (he's extremely snooty).

What's an aristocratic food?

bengalcat reports are varied on whether avocado is toxic to dogs. Some reports say it’s only the stone but my dog throws up if he eats even a tiny bit.

ScribblyGum · 31/01/2019 08:27

I like that link Barbara Grin

Garlic is toxic to dogs. Gives them haemolytic anaemia.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 31/01/2019 08:31

Chickpeas are middle class? Who'd of thunk it!

Think we will stick to the working class notion of a little bit of cheese for tablet adminstering.

bengalcat · 31/01/2019 08:34

I just open the mouth of any animal , out tablet as far back as possible on their tongue and close mouth briefly holding it closed - they automatically swallow

SoupDragon · 31/01/2019 08:34

Thinking about it, my dog is clearly scum - I think I could place the tablet in the cats' litter tray and he would snaffle it up along with everything else... my dog is disgusting.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 08:34

Meat paste works well but isn't middle class. Mine like beef and tomato.

Yeah... I fondly remember the experienced vet trying to get a worming tablet into the late FatCat. As the tablet got soggier and the cat more pissed off, she switched to a spot on treatment.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/01/2019 08:38

bengalcat Assuming your username reflects the animals you need to tablet, what do you do with the writhing mass of claws while you are briefly holding the mouth closed?

I got lessons from the vet on cat tablet administration, but there are still some cats that I can't manage to do, and I still look like I've fallen into the blackberry bushes after a lot of them.

bengalcat · 31/01/2019 08:45

Yes username does indeed reflect one of my brood - manage to avoid writhing mass of claws but appreciate some felines will be more more feisty - perhaps get another person to hold cat then speed is of the essence , I grab the upper jaw with thumb on one side and index finger on the other , lift it up ie open mouth , put tablet right on the back of tongue then close mouth and hold shut for @2s - job done

AvaTheGardener · 31/01/2019 08:48

cream cheese all the way here.

One small dollop to lull into a false sense of security.
Second dollop WITH PILL filling
Third dollop to confuse further and encourage swallowing of second dollop
What's left on the spoon for the home vet nurse.

RedForShort · 31/01/2019 08:52

Well if we're going to be all serious about tablet administering, a gentle blow on the nose helps when holding mouth closed after you've put the tablet on the back of the tounge and got someone else to hold the cat . Then run ...

Daytimetellysucks · 31/01/2019 08:56

We swear by cocktail sausages

DDog (now departed) had to take 4 capsules a day. I used to poke a hole in each end of a cocktail sausage and push the pills inside. He would actually beg for his pills every morning and night

justforareply · 31/01/2019 09:06

Mine is fine with a coating of mature cheddar squidged round it. Friend with bigger dog microwaves a babybel for a few seconds and pushes tablet into it

MeetJoeTurquoise · 31/01/2019 09:21

My dog is clearly not middle class enough but she is very dim . She takes meds stuckin a wedge of vintage, mature cheddar. Oh the shame Grin

magimedi · 31/01/2019 09:37

My (late) cat was a fiend. The only way I could get him to take a pill was to crush it up finely, mix with soft butter & smear on his leg. He would then wash it all off! Even the vet couldn't get a pill in him.

Triffictriffid · 31/01/2019 10:24

Yorkshire dog here. tablet pushed into chunk of fruit cake with another chunk of Wensleydale cheese to accompany. Jobs a good un.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 31/01/2019 10:32

Mines dumb. Refuses to take it but if you throw it in the air he catches and swallows it.
