I'm selling some bits of furniture as collection only. Got a delightful message from one potential buyer, saying he'd like one item, but only if I would post it to him 200 miles away. He then helpfully went on to tell me I could probably dismantle it and it'd pack flat.

Well no shit Sherlock, but 1. I don't want the rigamarole of taking it apart, wrapping it up and sending it tracked to him, which is why it's collect in person; and 2. It's an auction, you have to be the highest bidder; and 3. How about if you really want something you ask, rather than telling me what you want me to do?

I've said no, politely. I'm now expecting him to win the auction then tell me I need to take it apart and post it to him!

Block him from bidding. Sods Law dictates that otherwise he WILL win!

wowfudge · 31/01/2019 08:20

That's a very good point Getrude - I'll do it.

You could tell him to organise his own courier.

I’d probably just block him tho.

I'm not going there - I've got matching items for sale with some of the same bidders on some of the items. He's a CF!

You could tell him to organise his own courier.

Never, ever do this. Buyer can then claim item not received and you'll have no tracking to fight the case as the buyer has it. Potentially you can be down both the item and the money that you would have to refund. Angry

I had one who got a full kitchen and range oven for £101. I was fine with the price as wanted shot as my new one was arriving imminently. Anyway, he refused point blank to have the cooker removed professionally stating that it was probably ‘plug and play’ I said no chance and he said I should pay for removal. I said unfortunately I couldn’t facilitate that and cancelled the sale and he lost out on a real bargain just because he was too tight to pay £30 to remove the cooker. I ended up selling just the cooker for £220, professionally removed 😂

Years ago I sold DD's Leap Pad. It came with dozens and dozens of books and a backpack so I'd put collection only because I really couldn't be arsed with packing it all up.

My winning bidder was from Spain.

To say I was baffled was an understatement, but I received a message within the hour to explain she was an ex pat and her mum, who lived locally to me, was coming to visit the week after and would pick it up and take it over for her DD. She turned up, was thrilled with the purchase and left glowing feedback.

But yes, back to thread and gertrude is right. Collection only items have just 2 rules.
Never accept Paypal (cash only)
Never accept Couriers

I blocked him.

Good! I hope it makes him cross.

wowfudge · 02/02/2019 08:01

I've had someone asking if I'll ship to Canada - would be cheaper to make a copy than muck about doing that! At least this person was polite and asked.

I've been on the other end. Won an auction for an item. Seller then refused to send it (was listed with postage) as my winning bid wasn't the amount he wanted for it. I got eBay involved and they refunded me but I never got the item. Turns out he did that quite frequently. I don't think he understood eBay properly.

I'm currently watching an item. It's on its 3rd relisting as it isn't meeting the reserve price. I've messaged the seller asking what the reserve price is and if it doesn't sell this time if she'd put it as buy it now at the reserve price but she's refusing. I wouldn't mind, except the highest bid (twice me, once someone else) has been at the level the same item has sold at on other listings, do it isn't like I'm getting a mega bargain!

FamilyOfAliens · 02/02/2019 10:04

You may want revise your listing to include a clear statement that the items must be collected from your address and will not be dismantled or posted under any circumstances.

Shouldn’t have to be necessary but clearly it is.

wowfudge · 02/02/2019 21:09

I have clearly stated it's collect in person from X village and cash on collection only. We've also had the usual 'will you take £50' for something which is worth significantly more. My experience of selling on eBay tells me that someone trying to bag a bargain in the early days of an auction means it's definitely worth, and is going to go for, more.

The same buyer bought several matching items - then despite me messaging re-stating payment on collection, paid for the lot by PayPal! So I've refunded and reiterated cash on collection. Annoying as on several fairly low value items I've now incurred PayPal's processing fee. Grrr. Seems to have been a genuine mistake by the buyer, and I know eBay tells you to pay if you win the item, but I am wary. They are collecting in the week.

OP posts:
Girlsnightin · 03/02/2019 22:02

Why cash only for collection?

guessmyusername · 03/02/2019 22:02

I found ebay not too good for collection only items, too many folk dont read the ad! I have used facebook marketplace much more successful (and cheaper!) for larger items and no paypal.

wowfudge · 03/02/2019 22:22

Because the buyer can pay by PayPal, collect the item then claim they have been unable to collect. As a seller you can't prove they have actually collected and PayPal tend to side with the buyer unless you have absolutely proof they actually collected. So the buyer gets refunded but also has your item.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 03/02/2019 22:24

I've never had an issue before - it is unusual for one buyer to win several auctions with one seller though.

Girlsnightin · 03/02/2019 22:32

Ahhh ok. Thanks for clarifying.
