What shall we buy for DD for her 18th gift?

She's tricky to buy for at the best of times, but I'd like the idea of giving her something that she will remember in the future.

Not jewellery as she hates the feel of metal and won't wear any form of jewellery.

Not a watch - see above.
Not anything for her room as she's very tidy and minimalistic.
Not a car (even if we were minted) as she has no part time job to be able to afford to run it due to devoting her time to her studies and a couple of evenings volunteering.

She's not having a party, instead I'm taking her away for a few days break to the place of her choice - I offered NY. She chose Athens as she loves ancient history and wants to see the ruins there. We will do a walking tour while we are there.

So she knows she's had a fair few ££ spent on the trip and isn't really expecting a gift, but I'd like to get her something to mark the occasion.

I have the same problem for my sons 21st. Hes asked for some storage jars for his flat kitchen! Lovely he is easily pleased but it doesnt seem right.

How about a picture for her bedroom of Athens? Or similar? Something for her to look at and remember her birthday?

A nice leather bag, big soft shawl like scarf, leather or sheepskin gloves, a new leather purse?

A beautiful history book. General history, Roman history? Or if she is interested in travel a special accessory. I have a silver compass of my father's I treasure. Something along those lines perhaps?

Silver engraved keyring ? My fill is 84 and still uses his bought for his 21st birthday !

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/01/2019 23:03

Thankyou for the suggestions.
We are away in Athens just before her birthday so could bring something back from there for her if she sees something she likes.

I like the idea of a photo album, I have lots of photos, but don't really have many of me as a child as my Mum has those still, so giving her her own album is appealing.

As is the engraved keyring.

We've funded (and still are) her driving lessons as her 17th birthday and it's still costing a fair bit once we've added on the application, theory (passed first time) 30 lessons and counting and 2 failed tests, bless her. So she's not expecting much at all as I mentioned in my OP. Something to surprise her will be good.

Across my 18th, 21st I got some good memorable things as well as the usual jewellery/watch/Stuff/stuff for my room/home

Classic designer, scarf, bag, wallet, key fob. (Depending on budget, LV, Burberry, mulberry or go for classic non branded version, leather bag, cashmere/lambs wool scarf)
Luggage, backpack (was about to go travelling)
Leather travel journal, monogrammed.
Leather luggage tag, passport holder. (If you plan on going away, something like this could be nice and linked to your trip)

I still have all of these things and to some degree use most of them from time to time.

Also gorge Jensen do really nice key rings/fobs. www.georgjensen.com/en-au/accessories/elephant-keyring/3584888.html?cgid=6#start=41
Booked marked them recently as a gift to remember - only saying elephant as they are a maternal animal.
How special OP !!

A lovely leather bound journal before she goes. Some comfortable walking trainers before the trip. A framed photo of the trip when she gets back

Mont Blanc pen - received from my cousin. I wasn’t exactly impressed at 18 but I still own it and use it nearly 30 yrs later so it has definitely stood the test of time. Can’t believe how expensive they are now!
