How much of a raise for taking on line management responsibilities?

Hi all,

I've been told that I'm due to get some extra resource as two colleagues will be joining my department (which consists of just me!) and I will assume line management responsibility for them both.

This is great for me in terms of extra support and personal development, but how much more money should I be pitching for, do you think?

For context, I'm on c£40k in a private, manufacturing business who are doing well, business wise.

Is there any insight/formula I can reference?

Thanks Smile

Do you have other line managers in the company with a small team under them? If so, I'd ask to match their salary.

The teams are so varied in discipline and size that I don't think there would be a parallel comparison unfortunately but thank you for responding to my neediness!

I wouldn’t say there’s a formula. Look at other similar roles advertised with management responsibility to get some perspective perhaps. I wouldn’t always assume lots more £ though.
Do you have previous management experience? Are they going give you management training?

If you’re taking on additionally responsibility within the same privately held company, it’s unlikely that they will benchmark you to a brand new salary level (and it’s tricky to assess when there isn’t internal precedent). It would probably be different in civil service etc due to banding.

Think carefully about the type of new role and the doors it may open externally. In my last job, I took a very significant step up in terms of the role and geographical responsibilities. The salary increase was only 10%. I was really not happy about the compensation, but the promotion had already been announced and I’d been doing the job for a couple of months by the time they got round to the salary review. The net increase was in no way worth the extra stress and workload. However, a couple of years later, the practical experience helped me obtain a fabulous new role externally that was more appropriately compensated.

Good luck. Always good to think of your next few career moves too

Great advice @Amongstthestars - thank you. I should probably stop looking at this as a financial step up, as the increase in remit and responsibilities is a greatvstep up for me *and to be honest, I'm quite easily bought!)

I'll pribably start negotiations at +20% and let them talk me down 😁😂

Good job they're not promoting me based on typing accuracy...
