Is it stupid to quit my job?

I want to progress in my career but still work part time (youngest child starts school in September). I don't have experience in a specific area and would be willing to work full time in a temporary/ maternity cover job to gain that experience (often employers for these posts have fewer applicants and therefore more chance of me getting it). I've been applying for part time permanent posts in jobs which require that experience but so far I've had no interviews.
Would it be stupid to quit my job so I'm free at the time of year when people are less likely to apply, get a temporary job and then use that as a stepping stone to something permanent? Money would be ok for 9 months or so without my wage.

I forgot to add that quitting my current job at an odd time of year causes lots of problems for them and I'm not willing to do that.

So - why would you want to work full time for up to a year, but then change to part time?

It might be worth talking to a recruitment agent (if you haven't already) to get a good understanding of what's required and how you can get your foot in the door? Is it their advice that you're following?

I don't want to work full time in the long term, or at least for a few years. However I can see that I'm not going to be able to get a job doing the specific thing I want to without direct experience of it. So I was wondering if it would be worth applying for jobs where there is less competition (ie full time, odd time of year for recruitment). PT jobs seem rare and competitive.

I'm not taking the advice of an agent, I'm thinking this based on my boss who said PT jobs are very competitive, especially in the organisations I've applied to so far (the only PT jobs have come up in very nice organisations).
