Periods - Help!

Hi all,

I'm a man with an 11 year old daughter. My DP has just gone abroad for a fortnight and with a spectacular sense of timing my DD has started her first period this morning. Cue a quick 6am trip down to Sainsburys to pick up 4 million different brands of sanitary pad and we've thrown sickies from school and work today as DD didn't feel she could cope this morning. Current plans are duvet day on the sofa with a few films.

My DP has had conversations with DD before about periods and obviously I know all the basics but I just wanted to know if there's anything that I'm likely to get asked that's likely to blindside me. DP isn't likely to be contactable until sometime tomorrow due to travelling and the only other female family member who DD would be comfortable talking about this stuff with is away with DP.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Remember not to flush the sanitary towels. Wrap and bin instead (Do you have a bathroom bin?) I'd get a mattress protector for the bed in case of leaks in the night. Cold water is great for getting blood stains out. My dd likes black pants for period days but had to buy ladies pants as they don't seem to do them in kids sizes. You can get period pants too but we've never tried them.

Did your dp tell your dd about cramps and how handle them? Hot water bottles and paracetamol or nurofen do a period specific one.
I second black underwear and mattress protector as stains from leaks can be embarrassing (especially at your DDs age).

Cheers both, that's really helpful!

And if she wants a bath or shower she needs to know it's not unhygienic in the slightest to do so with a period! It can be scary seeing blood, and of course it dilutes in water and looks like loads, but it's perfectly ok for it to go down the drain and warm water can really ease tummy cramps and nausea.

You can have my Dad-of-the-Day award 👍

Sounds like you are doing a great job! Dd May be rather emotional but sounds like you've got it covered, chocolate can be a help too.

Baths have always been a "waste of time" in her eyes so shower it is.

How to train your dragon has been watched and much chocolate ice cream consumed. Jurrassic Park next. Rewatching How to train your dragon 2 was vetoed by DD as far too upsetting for today. Thats fine for her but the kitchen scene in Jurassic park still scares me witless!
