It definitely gets better! It was a long time ago but on my first lesson I closed my front door and then leaned against it and put my hand through the glass 🙈 had minor cuts and blood to clear up...after that drama I got in the car , learnt how to drive off and then realised I forgot my glasses so had to ask instructor to go back so I could get them. God knows what he must have thought of me I was so flustered! I was slow to learn, got flustered quite a lot in the first few lessons and ended up taking 3 tests. But, 15 years later I am an experienced and successful driver and I'm glad I persisted. Hang on in there, you will be able to do it.

I had lessons for over a year with three different instructors and literally could not do it, it just would not click in my brain.

I intend to have another go in an automatic.

You will honestly be fine

And if its any consolation ive been driving for over 30 years

And i still come home after a drive feeling exactly the same way

And yes id try and find a new instructor that's definitely going to add to your stress if you think they are going to yell at you...and when they do!!

it's a shouty woman not a shouty man Grin the one man I had was sound but i had to quit, years ago. Bugger, yeah I know a few people going down the automatic route.

I felt exactly the same as you! Driving felt so alien to me! I ended up taking big breaks in my driving lessons of a few years because I just felt like I was getting nowhere (which I massively regret as I could have been driving much sooner)
But one day I realised that I felt much calmer and I was doing the driving without my instructor having to take over or talk me through what to do.
It did take me ages and three attempts but I passed my test a year ago.
Things honestly will get better!
I have to be honest though, I still felt a bit nervous after passing so I have bought an automatic and that has suited me much better.
Keep going, the majority of people I spoke to felt the same whilst they were learning.
I also second the "think about all the idiots that can drive" That is what kept me going when I was close to giving it up.
Good luck!

Please look for another instructor- it makes all the difference. You need someone you feel comfortable with. Most will offer a single lesson before commitment to a long term plan as decent instructors know you need to work well together.
It took me a while to find one for DS, but it was very worthwhile. He was semi retired having always been an instructor, and had been a blue light instructor too. You could ask you local police or fire station for contact details of a blue light instructor?

I've been doing one lesson a week since June, I've had about 30 odd and it's only been during my last two that something clicked and they were both pretty successful lessons (still got a fair bit to go).

I've really struggled, my judgement of distances is rubbish so my routines are all out of place and I end up leaving everything to last minute. I struggle keeping my observations of what's ahead of me while trying to check my mirrors regularly. Gears has been a struggle I thought about automatic but decided to keep going.

I'm a nervous passenger so a nervous driver, rescue remedy didn't work for me. My mind just seems to go blank when I'm in the driver's seat and I really felt like giving up but after my last couple of lessons I'm starting to feel a bit more positive.

Having a shouty instructor can't be doing you any good. My instructor is brilliant never once has he got annoyed with me. A new instructor would probably help you a lot I know if I had an instructor who shouted at me my nerves would be all over the place!

Definitely change your instructor, shouting and making you feel like a child is what's holding you back.

I was so nervous and use to forget loads of things and panic a lot.
I had a great instructor, found by word of mouth. He was calm and chatty so would but me at ease, as he'd be having a normal conversation then just slip in a "you need to be changing gear here" then he'd carry on chatting as normal, or "you need to move further away from the parked cars, I'd rather you take the wing mirror of a moving car, the insurance company just won't believe a park car was in the wrong"ShockGrin had lessons for a whole year then passed first time.
