Sparking blanket

DH is having trouble sleeping tonight and just got up to go to the spare room for a change of scene. As it's cold in the little room, he grabbed a blanket off the bed, and got a series of static shocks, which appeared all the more alarming as all the lights in the Room were off so we could see the sparks - it was like the nye fireworks (albeit on a much smaller, hand sized scale).
Is this normal? Is it dangerous? Should I be concerned? Is my DH going to set my bed on fire? Should I ltb?

I can get static shocks off my own hair, especially in cold weather when there's not much moisture in the air.

It's normal and I've never heard of it being dangerous.

Oh, that's absolutely fine. It's dead impressive when you see it with dark adapted eyes.

Try wearing two fleeces and taking one off after being in the dark a few minutes. Crackle!

We've made it through the night without combusting, it really was quite an unsettling sight!
