cystitis - aching abdomen and back

Hi, if anyone is up and has good advice please chime in. I have been treating cystitis by drinking tons of water for a couple of days. the stinging sensations come and go basically depending on how full of water I am. I am now feeling really achey in my abdomen and lower back. No fever, feeling a bit tired and rubbish but no temperature. This is fine to wait till the morning to get a prescription for ABs, right?

I had this at the weekend and was told by 111 that the back and lower abdominal pain meant I should be seen within two hours. NHS 111 have a symptom checker you can use to see what the score is NHS111

I just did that and got the same result. But surely it's ok to wait one night? I don't want to be going out at 11pm in the snow. I'm shattered and I'm in bed

What happened, oddsocks. Did you get to see someone? And did it help - what did they do? were you able to get to a GP or did you do something else?

Oh another question - I have an unused prescription of amoxycillin, which I was given for an other infection another time. Should I just use that?

I was called back within 10 minutes and offered an appointment at my nearest urgent care centre, I was seen more or less as soon as I got there and given an antibiotic and told next time not to wait it out as it can become serious very quickly once you have back pain. I wasn't given amoxicillin, maybe 111 could advise if it is OK to take?

"But surely it's ok to wait one night?"

No it isn't. It really isn't. A kidney infection can have very serious implications. Please ring 111.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 29/01/2019 23:27

Nope, it sounds like a kidney infection and you should see a dr.
Not sure amoxicillin is great for urinary infections; trimethoprim and some others are better at actually getting into the urinary system as far as I know.

PurpleWithRed · 29/01/2019 23:36

Ring 111, and don’t take the amoxicillin unless advised to. Antibiotics are specific to different condictions and taking ones that won’t work is pointless for you and not great for antibiotic resistance.

lovespaniels · 29/01/2019 23:38

OP don't want to scare you- I had a UTI last year which got bad in a few hours, the back and abdominal pain indicates it's moved onto a kidney infection. I was sent straight to OOH doctor via 111 then taken to A&E for an immediate IV antibiotic. You must be feeling rotten, I know I did!

Definitely call 111, it's serious if it's a kidney infection.

YeahCorvid · 30/01/2019 08:15

Thanks everyone. I called 111 and had a call back from a dr - he thought I was ok to wait till morning as I had no temperature. That was what I wanted to hear as it's 20 miles on snowy roads to anywhere I could get seen.
I'm aching still and waiting for 0830 when I can call the surgery.

Have you any bicarbonate of soda
Take a half teaspoon in a glass of water every hour
That will neutralise the sting a bit

My dil has only one good kidney and she’s prescribed those.
