Managerial advice anyone?

I am at breaking point. I own a business which is successful- clients are happy and the bank is healthy. However, I just can not keep staff. Staff are given training, Christmas parties, Christmas bonus’ , a day of in the week and free childcare. why can’t I keep them? Another notice handed in today. What am I doing wrong?

I'm presuming you are a small business. It's also often harder to recruit to a smaller budiness, well. Have you got a behavioural profile for your ideal employee and tailor your interview questions appropriately?

There is often a high turnover of staff in boutique businesses as they grow because it takes a particular kind of person to be a good fit.

Have you discussed this with the manager and asked her for reasons? Any long term staff you could ask?

Do your staff work a Rota system or is it Mon-Fri set hours? If a Rota, are the new staff getting the crappy shifts?

I know. Two were mental health and two closer to home. Business only open a year so no old time clique

So in the last year, how many have you recruited and how ma y have left? What size is your staffing team? Are you yourself based at the workplace, do you see what is going on day to day?

Hard to tell from the information given but my department has a high turnover of employees and that is down to management being horrendous and one of the offices has 2 members of staff that have created bitchiness/atmosphere basically creating 2 sides to the office

Could any of this be happening?

From your perspective it's sarcasm. From the staff perspective it may be interpreted very differently.

Is it hospitality?? Perfectly normal, the turn over is 47% so am told. Compared to say education turn over which isn’t even 2.%

Do you have a partner or family member working there with you, or a friend? Such setups are always unpleasant to work at for everyone else.

What industry are you in? And how do you recruit staff?

Both of those may impact on rentention figures.

Also, do you have any staff members who have stayed? They could a) give you the answer and b) be the reason.

Someone posted on LinkedIn the other day ‘people don’t leave companies, they leave managers’ which in my experience of managing large and small teams is very true. I’d have a good look at yourself and the manager you referred to. Something is not right here, especially if the pay is good and your business isn’t in the arse end of nowhere and they find it difficult to get to.
