Stupid oven question that Google doesn't have the answer to.

So I have a freestanding cooker with a large fan oven. The fan oven has broke again, it was repaired 3 times under warranty now out of warranty so saving up to buy a new one as the repair quotes I have range from £150-£200. Can't justify £200 on a cooker that has broken 4 times in 12 1/2 months. It will take me a while to save up for a new one the hob does work so not to bad. The oven has a few settings that I have never used so here is my question. Will the conventional oven setting still work? I think that the conventional oven has a top and bottom element where the fan has an element in the back. I don't want to just put it on to try without knowing if it will work as it trips the fuse box and it is in a hard to reach place.

When our fan oven stopped working I stopped using it until it was repaired. I said to the engineer that it would be great to have my oven back and he said that I could have just used it without the fan. I felt a bit silly! Do you know it's definitely the fan that's broken?

Is it only just over a year old? Is it correctly installed and are your electrics OK?

I would seriously be pursuing my consumer rights on this. The legal minimum guarantee is 2 years assuming you are in the UK and you would expect it to last a minimum of 5 or 6 under consumer rights legislation.

If it's broken 4 times in a little over a year, you probably have a right to a replacement cooker by now.

The fan still works as in it spins and the light still works which is the same as before. The last 3 times it has been the fan element in the back of the oven that went. My oven does have a square element of some sort at the top of it.

I had an oven where the element would go every 6 months or so. I YouTube'd how to fix it. Bought an element from eBay/Amazon and did it myself. Think the elements were about 20 quid or so.

Thanks for that @BarbaraofSevillle I will looking in to it.
Yes the cooker is 1 year 2 weeks old and now broken 4 times! I rang the warranty department and they won't do anything, I eveb asked jow long they gaunenteed their repairs for. It was installed my the company I bought it from and I was given a certificate by them and the electrics are fine we have an RCD fuse box and the house is a new build.

I would email the technical department of the company with your query about using the conventional oven.

Print out their reply if it tells you that you can go ahead and use the oven. Then if anything untoward happens, you have got their email as a starting point for a complaint.

I'd consider writing to the MD of the company complaining of the inadequate repairs, poor service etc and asking for compensation. Is the cooker even fit for its purpose? I'd say not.
Trading Standards might be another route worth looking at.

What brand and model is it?

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 29/01/2019 13:35

Don't bother with any of that. Back to the shop you bought it from asking for a refund as it's clearly not fit for purpose.

It’s pretty easy to replace the element, ours goes maybe once or twice a year, they cost about £15 and it takes 10 minutes.
Just try the conventional oven, I don’t think it can do any harm.

It is a Servis cooker not sure on the model but it has been a pain every since it was purchased. The rails keep getting jammed as well and they have been replaced also.
Well I emailed as suggested and had a prompt reply which said yes the conventional oven setting is a different element so tried it and it works! Well for now anyway which is great, buys me some time why I figure put my next moved with this heap of junk. I think I might save and replace it as to of the jobs are temperamental as well sometimes they will work sometimes they won't. I think I paid over £400 for something that belongs on the scrap heap.
