How do i know if my heaters are storage heaters?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm moving into a new house on Saturday and it has no gas, it has little heaters on the wall that go on and off with individual switches and they make heat straight away when you turn them on, they are little, about 18 inches across and 2 or 3 inches deep. Does that sound like a storage heater?

Hi no storage heaters would not go on straight away they have to charge over night first

Thanks Smile I thought so, I'm trying to work out how much my heating is going to cost but all Google throws up is stuff about storage heaters! Argh

Some storage heaters have a convection heater on top which you can switch on as a booster. They absolutely eat money, however, and dry the air out terribly. I’d be surprised if the house only had convection heaters but they sound small for storage heaters. Do you have a photo? Is there any detail in the F&F inventory, or could you ask the estate agent to clarify?

I'd put a picture of them and any controls so were can see what they are. Do you have 2 meters too for day and night usage?

Storage heaters are as thick as a brick in depth...from the front to the wall. Yours sound too thin/small and able to switch on instantly.

I've electric radiators here [with a multi fuel stove in the main room] which I use in the day time before the stove is lit from 5.30pm on. I only put the one on in the room I am in, never use them in the bedroom, am home a lot of the time and the costs aren't bad at all but the place is very well insulated.

I had storage heaters in my flat and they had a convection heater that you could switch on for some instant heat

Storage heaters tend to be big thick chunky things because they're filled with ceramic bricks that get heated up overnight. Convection heaters are like an electric fire element in a slim, small box maybe with an active fan but more likely just airflow. You can probably see the floor through one if you look down it.

Ahh thanks everyone, sounds like a convection heater then, you can see the heating element inside them and see straight through to the floor, I don't move in properly till Saturday so not there atm or I would post a pic

If you're not able to install central heating, I'd consider investing in some oil filled radiators. They hold the residual heat for a while so you may find them cheaper to run.

My house is a mix of storage and convectors so it could be you have the same. I only put the convectors on when really cold.
