Birdfeeders.

Yesterday at the garden centre, I decided to treat our feathered friends to a bird feeder with seeds, plus a packet of mealworm.

I also bought a peanut solid square food thingy with a feeder.

What kind of birds am I going to attract?

I already have wood pigeons who love the berries on our tree in Autumn, but would like to see, and identify, more birds.

Watch out for starlings, they devour everything! Bluetits, blackbirds, sparrows, finches, the odd robin. Watch out for destructive squirrels too

@dementedpixie, how far can squirrels jump?

I have the solid peanut food hanging off the far side side of the shed, above a 10ft fence.

The seed feeder is on the side of the greenhouse, but I think I’ll have to move that now, with the thought of squirrels.

We put seed in hanging feeders and on a bird table for the small birds. We get starlings, tits, robins. We scatter seed and cornflakes or any dry cereal thats gone stale on the ground and we get pigeons, blackbirds, magpies, crows, collared doves. Although the daft pigeons often try and get food from the hanging feeders which is quite entertaining!

On the odd times I cook food that drips fat such as sausages or burgers, I leave the fat to solidify and put that on the bird table too. They also love grated cheese.

You can put out any fruit that is past it's best too. Hang apples with string and pierce the skin a few times to get them started on it.

@BooksAreMyOnlyFriends and @dementedpixie thanks, that’s very helpful.

It’s a lovely day out there, so hopefully we might see some visitors to our garden at some point 🙂.

If this is your first garden feeder it may take a while before the birds start to use it.
Took about 2 months before they came to ours, worth the wait though as we get loads of goldfinches, blue tits, sparrows. They bring their babies in the summer.
And there's always a robin there at this time of year.

It’ll be worth the wait, I bet 🙂.

I hope to see a robin or two.

There’s not many birds flying about out there at the moment. Maybe they’re all indoors on Birdsnet, typing about some woman who keeps checking her feeders to see if they’ve been been pecked at yet ...
