Drunken memory loss, anyone else?

Does anyone else suffer badly with this?

I had a lovely night with my husband & my brother & his wife last night but I've woken up and have no memory whatsoever of the last part of the night. In fairness, I did drink a bottle and a half of wine!

Does anyone else get this? Really puts me off drinking!

Happened to me before. Generally means I fell asleep in taxi.

It's horrible, I used to imagine I had been awful to people. Never was the case though but always worried me.

Prinstress · 27/01/2019 07:32

This happens to me every single time I drink and I actually didn't realise it wasn't normal until I read The Girl On The Train Shock

Really frightening but as you were out with people you trust I wouldn't fret too much, had you eaten much during the day?

Bishybarnybee · 27/01/2019 07:37

Seriously, often the first sign of an alcohol problem. And a bottle and a half of wine is possibly another sign.

HappilyNeverAfter1 · 27/01/2019 07:38

Glad it's not just me.

Yes, i had a big dinner.

It basically always happens to me if i drink to excess. Scares me and makes me really worried that I might have been an idiot.

No. I have never experienced memory loss as a result of drinking too much alcohol.

HappilyNeverAfter1 · 27/01/2019 07:39

I should add I drink once in a blue moon so no alcohol problem/addiction here.

There is a scientific reason for it. Once you reach a certain level of drunk the part of your brain responsible for recording short term memories stops working. It’s happened to me so many times even when I’ve felt like I haven’t even had a huge amount to drink and the next day I suffered with the worst beer fear and assumed I’d done something terrible and hence couldn’t remember as I’d blocked it all out.
It would seem a bottle and a half of wine is a bit much for you. Once I stopped drinking as much it stopped happening. I’m not trying to be sanctimonious, I know how horrible it feels and the only way to prevent it is to not drink to excess. Or wear a go pro and watch the footage the next day 😂

RockinRobinTweets · 27/01/2019 07:43

It happens to me every time I drink too much - horrible isn’t it? It’s the paranoia that comes with it too.

Screamingeels · 27/01/2019 07:46

Oh yes.. part of the reason I don't drink at all any more. Whats the point of social events you don't remember?

There is a fab book called "Blackout, remembering the things I drank to forget" by Sarah Hepola which goes into the mechanisms which cause blackouts. But it is a getting sober memoir too, so if you don't think you have any issues yourself it may not chime with you.

jessstan2 · 27/01/2019 07:47

Happened to me twice.

peterpainauchocolat · 27/01/2019 07:49

Used to happen to me all the time when I was younger. I quite often didn't remember how I got home. I rarely get that drunk before falling asleep these days!

It's horrible though isn't it.

HappilyNeverAfter1 · 27/01/2019 08:16

I hate it! Genuinely considering not drinking again!

Littleraindrop15 · 27/01/2019 08:21

I stopped drinking that often to rarely.. It's not knowing if you gone and done something stupid and having to rely on other people's feedback.. Fills me with anxiety. I don't even drink that much 2 vodka lemonades can black me out

HappilyNeverAfter1 · 28/01/2019 13:04

The fear is even worse today 😩

Whisky2014 · 28/01/2019 13:06

I have had this only on nights where I have drunk far too much. Since reducing how much a drank it's never happened again.

Whisky2014 · 28/01/2019 13:07

Drink water in between alcoholic drinks and make sure.you have a good meal BEFORE you start drinking. Once you start drinking, its too late

BigusBumus · 28/01/2019 13:12

This happens to me too, but weirdly only when I drink wine. I can drink the same units in G&T or V&DC and although I still get pissed, I don't lose my memory. I use this to my advantage if I am worried I might have a memory loss at a specific event.

DeadCertain · 28/01/2019 13:33

It's not happened to me; it would be enough to stop me drinking as I hate a loss of control.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 28/01/2019 13:46

No. But then I don't drink a bottle and a half of wine.

HappilyNeverAfter1 · 28/01/2019 15:35

No. But then I don't drink a bottle and a half of wine.

Point taken, I appreciate this is definitely over indulging. It's just frustrating that I know many others who drink that and are fine.

That's interesting... I actually drank lots of gin at new year come to think of it, with no memory loss! Maybe wine could be the issue for me.

It happened to me when I was young. I woke up next day with a pounding headache and a strange man next to me in bed. I remembered absolutely nothing about it and was totally horrified with myself. Had a boyfriend who was even more horrified though we did patch it up for a while (relationship wasn't really for keeps but I certainly hadn't wanted to do that to him, all his friends knew and he was humiliated).

Never again!
