What will baby need for 3 months?

Hello,

My husband and I will be relocating from Japan to England when our baby is 3 months old. We are only bringing with us as little as possible like clothes, we will buy furniture once in England.

Anything big like cot and pushchair we will leave behind and buy again in England.

For 3 months, what is minimum we need?

Same things you would need in Japan...

It's the Same baby, in a different country. Surely you will have some idea as most people would have "planned" for clothing etc. For after the first 12 weeks.

And the seasons are all the same. Spring is spring... summer is summer.

I moved with a 4 month old & a 2.5 yrs old to the uk from Australia.

Same as you would need in the uk?

Sorry should have said Japan, a baby has the same needs anywhere

Are you, breastfeeding or bottle?

Little one needs,
Something to eat
Somewhere to sleep (blankets, sleeping bag, sheets)
Nappies
If you drive a car seat

The rest is up to you,
You may want a room thermometer
Baby bath
Pram
Sling
Bouncer /swing
Activity mat

I would recomend a Union Jack dummy though maybe?

You will need to bring a car seat with you unless travelling from the airport via public transport (not taxi) it is a legal requirement for vehicles.

Have you got a travel cot/crib? They generally are lightweight and pack down but it's somewhere safe for the baby to sleep until you sort furniture. Unless you can get a moses basket delivered to the address you will be living in advance of your arrival.

What I mean is can I manage 3 months without a cot, pushchair etc? I don't want to get any more than what is needed because it will have to be sold again.

I walk around Akachan Honpo looking at all the goods and think "Will baby need that straight away?"

I can't explain in English what I mean.

Anything we can not take on airplane will follow in a container that will take 2 weeks to arrive. We can shop straight away for things we need though.

You can manage without a pushchair if you are using a Sling but you do need somewhere safe for the baby to sleep.

Something like this which can fit in a rucksack.

Let me get this right, your baby will be born in Japan, stay there for first 3 months, then move to England permanently?

If so, I’d buy as little as possible for Japan. Buy a pram with a car seat, Moses basket, clothes, nappies and obviously anything you need for feeding. A wrap maybe if you intend to babywear. I’d buy a very basic bouncy chair as I used it as a place to put them down during the day even as newborn, but I wouldn’t get one that had all the toys etc as they won’t be interested in that for the first 3 months.

Wait to buy everything else once you arrive in UK. Cot, push chair, play mats, bedding, more clothes etc

DrWhy · 27/01/2019 03:57

So, do you mean what will you need for those first 3 months in Japan that you won’t be able to bring with you to the UK?

MamaJapan · 27/01/2019 04:09

Yes that is what I mean, sorry, my English is not perfect.

I have a 9 week old. Things I use everyday day and could not manage without are:
Bedside cot
car seat
Pram
Baby grows
Steriliser and bottles (even though I breastfeed)

You can take the car seat and pram on the flight. You can keep baby in pram right up to the boarding gate where they will then take from you. It should then meet you on arrival. This is important as you will need somewhere to put baby whilst at airport. Good luck.

WinterHeatWave · 27/01/2019 04:33

I think I'd buy a carseat, pushchair, moses basket, gym mat and travel cot. Plus clothes, nappies, milk and bottles if formula feeding. Personally, I also used a sling a lot, and this can also ve useful on the plane, but it's not for everyone. Equally, if you are coming from a big city, and going to Lindon, and gave no intention of using a car, drop the carseat bit.
Then leave the moses basket in Japan, and bring the travel cot and other stuff. Then when you get to the UK, you can walk it drive about, and baby can be clothes, fed and sleep somewhere safe until the furniture arrives.

DrWhy · 27/01/2019 04:35

OK, so for my nearly 12 week old I have used clothes, nappies, nappy bin, muslins, bath thermometer, hooded towel, changing table, bedside cot and bedding, wrap, pram, car seat, bouncy chair, Moses basket.
You could just use the Moses basket overnight instead of the cot for the first 3 months. You can use a changing mat on the bed or floor instead of a changing table and a normal towel and bin is fine. As a PP has said you can bring the pram to the gate at the airport and a car seat and travel cot can usually come as your free luggage for an infant so you can bring those easily. The rest are small and you can probably get away with buying 0-3 month baby clothes in Japan, only bringing a few over and buying 3-6 month here.
You really don’t need toys, playmat etc at that age. You can live without a baby bath and use a changing mat on the bed or floor instead of a changing table.

StrawberryTraveller · 27/01/2019 08:07

I think you can get very little in Japan.

Buy a sling to carry baby - wait and get a pushchair when in england. If you live in a city in Japan then a sling will be easier anyway whilst baby is lightweight

Buy a travel cot. the baby bjorn one is lightweight and has a good mattress. you can use when you arrive in england also until you find what you like. travel cot can be taken on as luggage on plane as babies get 2 pieces.

Only get a car seat if you need in japan. otherwise you can use amazon.co.uk to deliver one straight to your new home if you will have a car in england

So:
Travel cot
good sling
Baby clothes - just basics for the first 3 months
Baby blanket

Babies 0-3 months don't really need toys etc. They can lay on a folded towel to play, and just a few simple small baby rattles or soft toy that will pack easily

In England, Amazon.co.uk or John Lewis are good stores to easily order baby stuff and get delivered to your home for the future
