Can you recommend me somewhere for a chilled week near good walking routes?

Trying to be brave this year and plan some solo holidays, one of which I’m thinking of doing a week in the UK self catering, just me and my dog. Am thinking a nice walk each morning, a bit of mooching around the local area and lots of reading/chilling out in a nice cottage or something.

Can anyone suggest anywhere that meets following criteria:

Easy access to lots of nice off lead dog walking routes (am not the fittest so think max 5 miles rather than all day treks)
Somewhere I can find a nice small self catering, dog friendly place that’s not mega expensive
Some nice towns/a beach or something to wander around would be nice but not essential
Somewhere quiet but not too isolated so I feel safe alone
Somewhere pretty/nice to be so it feels like a nice holiday?

I’m thinking there must be LOADS of places like this but don’t know where to start!

Am in the South of England so Scotland probably too far but happy to drive to most of England or Wales. Have done the South West a lot so would like somewhere other than Cornwall - thinking the Lake District? Wales? Norfolk? Can anyone recommend specific areas?

Am very flexible on dates but probably thinking early July or September to avoid school holidays but hopefully get some reasonable weather

Also - getting overwhelmed with the numbers of sites that come up when I search for accommodation, which are the best?

North York moors, Yorkshire coast. Northumberland. Lake district.

Dh and I walk a lot and have been exploring the Cleveland hills recently. We did a lovely circular walk from Osmotherley yesterday. I'll link it.

I hope you find somewhere you enjoy.

Annoyance · 26/01/2019 23:33

The New Forest seems to have lots of dog-friendly places.

Knittink · 26/01/2019 23:36

Lake District fits the bill! Beautiful walks of any length. Fantastic mountain views even without trekking high up. Very dog friendly in terms of accommodation, places to eat etc. Weather notoriously unreliable even by UK standards though!

Walks around Osmotherley. I couldn't find the one we did but that was 7 miles anyway. If you stay in Osmotherley the Golden Lion have gorgeous rooms.

I have heard Norfolk is very good for dog walks and dog friendly pubs and cafes. Friends have recommended around Burnham Market and I have seen there are lots of nice dog friendly Airbnb’s. Our dog loves seaside walks so we are looking forward to exploring the Norfolk coast with him!

The Suffolk coast - Southwold, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh, Dunwich

cheesenpickles · 26/01/2019 23:41

Isle of Wight.

Thank you - will start some research

Lake District is great. Check www.countrysidedogwalks.co.uk/ Dog-friendly walks that tend to avoid livestock or unsafe places. We've used their books a few times and never had a bad walk!

WhatwouldCJdo · 26/01/2019 23:54

Check out Peak District

mando12345 · 26/01/2019 23:54

Alnmouth would be a nice place to stay in Northumberland. Lots of walks and places to visit.

itsanewnameagain · 26/01/2019 23:55

Pembrokeshire - amazing beaches( freshwater, barafundle, stackpole etc). Loads of paths, very dog friendly (allowed on lots of beaches), and very beautiful- like a less congested Cornwall.

UbercornsGoggles · 27/01/2019 01:11

Have, only 13 posts so far but someone has already got in to suggest Alnmouth before me!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 27/01/2019 01:15

Lake District!

myidentitymycrisis · 27/01/2019 01:18

Pembrokeshire or cardigan bay beautiful and unspoilt.

daffydowndilys · 27/01/2019 01:26

Outside of these dates the Cornish coast path around Falmouth and the Helford river would be perfect, but dogs are not allowed on some beaches between Easter and October.

There are dog friendly beaches though and breath taking scenery.

I'm a local so PM me for more details.

Bouledeneige · 27/01/2019 01:28

I'd also say coastal Suffolk for great walks and pubs along the way. but I'm also glad you asked and looking for new ideas.

Rydale in North Yorkshire (in between york and Scarborough) would tick a lot of your boxes - beautiful countryside, the door to the North Yorkshire moors and Malton has just been voted most dog-friendly town in the UK! Plus the bakery in Hovingham is reason to visit alone.

freezinguplands · 27/01/2019 02:34

Another vote for Northumberland, we founder quieter, cheaper and generally more pleasant than the Lake District. It is my favorite part of England for walking, castles, cottages and good pubs.

MrsMacbeth · 27/01/2019 06:40

Places to stay in the Lakes so you wouldn't feel isolated: Keswick or Ambleside. Lots of shops and cafes where dogs are welcome.

I recommend Buttermere, Tarn Hows, Rydal Water and Whinlatter Forest for lovely dog walks that aren't too long.

cushioncovers · 27/01/2019 06:52

The Mumbles in Wales

Minniemountain · 27/01/2019 07:07

North Pembrokeshire. Walk sections of the coast path. There are walkers' buses so you don't need to do circular walks. Lots of little coves for you and dog to splash in.

Newport (Pembs, not Gwent), St Davids and Solva are all good for pottering.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 27/01/2019 07:12

I was also in Osmothersley yesterday! It's my favourite place to walk and is a lovely village. It's only an hour from my house so I've never stayed there but it would be a nice place to spend a week.

Footle · 27/01/2019 07:17

Off-lead for dog means no sheep, so do research carefully!

veeboo · 27/01/2019 07:23

Hi OP I use booking.com for everything. We just used it to book a lake district bnb. Air bnb also great for self catering.
