Passed your deoving test? I need knowledge

PLEASE!

So I passed my test 3 days ago. I learnt reverse bay parking with the 3 line rule and forward bay parking using my wing mirrors on the line I'm going into (hope that makes sense) Now I've passed I have a few issues.

  1. Driving a different car are the reference points dramatically different?
  1. Spoke to OH he thinks I'm insane and no one parks using such precise reference points so can't tell me any.
  1. Going 3 bays away from my space surely that's not ideal in the real world e.g someone behind me someone not realising I want that space when I'm driving away from it.
  1. Do any of you stick to these reference points.

My OH is trying to teach me to turn away from my space reverse straight till my ends in then turn to get my front end in. Sorry I don't know how easier to describe it.

I'm now petrified of parking as what I've learnt doesn't seem possible anymore

Many thanks

I know what you mean, yes it’s different in different cars in real life! I’ve never really worked out reversing into a bay (yeah it’s ublikejy you’d have space/time in real life to do it like you learn) I usually try to drive across two or just go in forward. I parallel park most often though. Maybe get a lesson or two with your instructor to help you work out parking? I did & it was very useful!

I was taught in a car with a reversing camera. Fucked me right up! Get yourself our and practising. I didn't and three And a half years later I'm a terrified driver. Be better than me!

Cars do vary, it just takes practice ..: my dad took me out to the local Tesco car park on a Sunday in my actual car and let me practice parking - got out and guided me in etc .. gave me reference points.

Practice makes perfect and you'll get the hang of it in your own car. You'll gain confidence quickly :-)

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of getting a few more lessons but instructors seem set on the 3 line rule. I am practicing, I start work very early so car parks empty thank god. I just dread people thinking I'm being a twatty Parker when I'm really not I'm trying my best. I absolutely dread thinking about banging into someone's car, I'd rather not drive 😂

We went from the luxury of a 15 by 20 drive on a quiet back lane to a narrower drive with the house behind part of it - on a main road. Before we moved, dh marked out the new drive on our old one and practiced reversing our long car into it until he got it perfect every time.

Just over a year in and he hasn't demolished the bay window, yet, though he's taken down some of the wall so the drive is wider!

Honestly, I was exactly the same when I started, I wasn’t even taught how to bay park as there wasn’t bay parking in my test (no spaces at centre!!) I watched all the YouTube videos about the three line rule etc. However the best thing you can do is practise ... we have ALL been there, yes there are drivers with no patience but you have to ignore them; harder said than done!! Keep practising some people find driving in easier than reversing in and vice versa... sometimes it depends upon the space. The more the practise the more you will understand how your car moves which I think, when you get that parking becomes easier... good luck OP but I think there is no magic formula just practise !!

Couple of hours with a competent bay/reverse parker and your nearest supermarket car park tomorrow afternoon after they have shut and practice until it’s almost second nature. I did this the day after I passed my test. Have never struggled with reverse parking of any sort since. If anything, I haven’t a clue how to park forwards!

One of those street rugs and a few toy cars can also help you to see in your mind where your car is, if you see what I mean.

This!

Don't get into the habit of going forward into a space. I did it once and got trapped as people who parked after and around me didn't leave enough swinging round space. I thought I'd never get out. 30 point turn and a gallon of sweat later.... never parked front end in again.
